Morgan Stanley's DevGen.AI tool represents both the promise and limitations of building custom AI tools for legacy code modernization. Reportedly, this in-house solution has processed 9 million lines of legacy code and saved 280,000 developer hours by translating outdated languages like COBOL into plain English specifications.


While the numbers are genuinely impressive, the effort begs many questions about the return on investment of such a project and what it means for companies considering a similar approach.
