The Advantages of Open-Source Software over Vendor Lock-in: A Java vs. COBOL Perspective

Many organizations with mission-critical COBOL applications have vendor support attached, a relationship that can bring a whole host of advantages to the bottom line. With it, you get time-tested features and hand-holding support when you need it.

The challenge comes when your needs evolve, and you want to adapt accordingly. You find yourself limited by a rigid ecosystem tethered to licensing agreements you signed a long time ago.

Fortunately, advancements in modernization afford a wider range of options than ever before. One option that's gaining traction is transforming all or part of your COBOL application to open-source Java, offering expanded freedom to tailor your technology to include the functionality your customers want and need, where they need it.

We have hands-on experience with the process, along with some advanced software that handles the transformation, and we have thoughts that may help you on your journey if a COBOL to Java transformation is right for you.

IT budgets should increase in 2024, but it still could be tough going for startups

IDC is predicting 6.8% tech growth in 2024, a slight uptick from 5% last year. Gartner predicts even more at 8.2%. Good news, right? Yes and no. Companies, particularly startups, will likely continue the 2023 drive for efficiency in a bid to emerge from growth and attain profitability. That could mean more streamlined payrolls ahead.
