Subject: Cinemapolis Recommends - Virtual Cinema 🎥 Updates for December 3, 2020

Gift Cards  â€¢ Merchandise  â€¢ Donations

Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

A HUGE thanks to all the generous folks who decided to support the cinema on Giving Tuesday this week. It was a great kick-off for our end of year appeal. Because of those gifts, we're now just a little over $20,000 away from our fundraising goal for 2020. Donations can still be made online or by sending a check directly to the cinema.

It's humbling to know that this community loves and values our theater so much. Thanks to your continued support, we've been able to keep our little staff employed throughout the pandemic and will be in a good position to hit the ground running just as soon as it is safe to do so.

In the meantime, we're adding THREE new offerings to our virtual cinema to keep the quality cinema flowing right into your homes.

As always, the full listing of all current and upcoming virtual films, including those titles ending tomorrow, can be found on our Virtual Cinema page.

NEW VIRTUAL CINEMA

VIRTUAL CINEMA
76 DAYS

“76 Days is unvarnished and raw, a first draft of a history that's still being written."

On January 23rd, 2020, China locked down Wuhan, a city of 11 million, to combat the emerging COVID-19 outbreak. Set deep inside the frontlines of the crisis in four hospitals, 76 DAYS tells indelible human stories at the center of this pandemic—from a woman begging in vain to bid a final farewell to her father, a grandfather with dementia searching for his way home, a couple anxious to meet their newborn, to a nurse determined to return personal items to families of the deceased.

These raw and intimate stories bear witness to the death and rebirth of a city under a 76-day lockdown, and to the human resilience that persists in times of profound tragedy.

VIRTUAL CINEMA
ANOTHER ROUND

“Pop some champagne, crack open the whisky and guzzle back that ice-cold beer. The feelgood film of this or any festival has arrived, and it’s a boozy-woozy marvel."

There’s a theory that we should be born with a small amount of alcohol in our blood, and that modest inebriation opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin and three of his friends, all weary high school teachers, embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday.

As the units are knocked back, some of the participants see further improvement and others go off the rails. It becomes increasingly clear that while alcohol may have fueled great results in world history, some bold acts carry consequences.

 CROCK OF GOLD

“The film is affectingly poignant in its frequently uncomfortable presentation of Shane MacGowan’s physical ruination."

A cinematic exploration of Shane MacGowan’s story, it Shane’s explosive existence, from his salad days, growing up in Ireland, to time spent on the mean streets of London and embracing the punk scene. To forming the Pogues and the conquering the known universe, we discover MacGowan’s passions, his humor & deep knowledge of music, history, spirituality & popular culture.

For this is Shane’s story. A vision of the world through the eyes of the great punk poet himself and an intimate cast of close friends and family members, all channeled through Temple’s inimitable and eternally vibrant lens.

CONTINUING ON VIRTUAL CINEMA

We're approaching the all-important "lame duck" session of Congress, when another COVID relief package is sure to be on the docket. The movie theater operators of America are desperate for help from Congress. Without such help, 70% of the theaters in the country could file for bankruptcy or close permanently by the end of the year. More than 70,000 jobs could be lost permanently.

Senators Schumer, Cardin and Shaheen have included relief for movie theaters as part of the Save Our Stages initiative, and SOS is now included in their COVID relief bill. We seek a bipartisan solution for pandemic relief now that would include these provisions to preserve moviegoing in America.

WHAT WE'RE ASKING
ADVOCATE FOR A BIPARTISAN SOLUTION THAT SUPPORTS THE EXPANDED SAVE OUR STAGES ACT:

  • Support an expanded SOS Act that provides grants to performance venues, live theater, and movie theaters, calculated at up to 45% of gross 2019 revenues or $12 million per company, whichever is less. Also allows a supplemental grant for businesses that have lost over 80% in revenue.

  • Movie theaters and live venues are among the hardest-hit industries that will be the slowest to recover from the pandemic.

  • SOS is the only proposal that offers the right amount of FLEXIBLE funding that will be the bridge that keeps the theaters from going dark forever. Across the country this legislation would save over 3,500 theaters.
