Greetings, Cinemapolitans,

For the first time in seven years, I won't be sharing news about the upcoming releases opening on Friday at Cinemapolis, and that's truly an odd feeling. As our community continues to grapple with changes to daily life due to the global pandemic, I'm sure Cinemapolis will be facing many more historic firsts in the coming weeks.

As you know, we voluntarily closed the theater on Sunday, March 15. At that time, we set a tentative re-open date of Friday, April 10, but conditions are changing daily, and we're prepared to stay closed until it is safe for our staff and this community to once again enjoy the cinematic experience together in the heart of downtown Ithaca.
What HAS NOT changed is our mission: Encouraging central New York residents to explore the power of film to entertain, educate, and to celebrate the human experience.

To that end, I'll be using our weekly updates to highlight past films from the Cinemapolis slate that are now available to view at home. We may have to self-isolate, but we needn't be isolated from great cinema! This week's choices are three examples of the great works directed by women from last year's calendar.

THE FAREWELL (2019, PG, 100 min)

Lulu Wang's semi-autobiographical family dramedy The Farewell premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and arrived on our screens on August 2nd, where it remained for nearly 2 months. A beautifully photographed, intimate, and at times hilarious look at the culture shock faced by a Chinese American family who return to Changchun to visit a sick relative, it garnered Awkwafina her first Golden Globe for a breakout performance as Billi.

If you missed it in the cinema, you can now stream it at home via the Amazon Prime Video service
HAIL SATAN? (2019, R, 95 min)

Penny Lane's playfully irreverent documentary Hail Satan? arrived on our screens in May of last year, after making its premiere at Sundance. In it, Lane profiles The Satanic Temple, a group whose controversial moniker belies their organized advocacy for the separation of church and state.

The result is an award-winning look at a group of zealously patriotic, constitutionally-minded outcasts.

BOOKSMART (2019, R, 100 min)

Olivia Wilde's raucous directorial debut Booksmart came to Cinemapolis in June, where it was a fan favorite for nearly two months. Offering a thoroughly contemporary take on the teen film genre, it follows Amy and Molly, a pair of over-achievers who attempt to cram a high school career's worth of partying into the last weekend of senior year.

Kaitlyn Dever (Them That Follow) and Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird) are a winning team in this fresh comedy that won Best First Feature at this year's Film Independent Spirit Awards

If you missed it in the cinema, you can now stream Booksmart on Hulu.
The outpouring of support since our announcement about temporary closure has been inspiring and more than humbling.

A note to all you BRAND NEW Cinemapolitans who purchased a membership this week - we'll be post-dating them so you'll be sure to get a FULL YEAR of benefits as soon as we re-open.

Likewise, all current memberships will be extended by at least a month, so you can rack up the points when we're back in action.

And ALL members should keep an eye on their inbox, as we're negotiating an EXTRA special benefit just for members to allow you to enjoy some hand-picked cinema from home. Stay tuned for a special announcement!
In the meantime, thanks again to everyone in the Cinemapolis family for your patience and understanding during these uncertain times. I look forward to seeing you all at the movies again very soon!
