Summer is upon us in Ithaca, and there are TWO new reasons to come in and cool off with a movie this weekend: - Winner of the Palm d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Dheepan is a compelling and timely drama from Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone, A Prophet). Dheepan, played by novelist and former child soldier Jesuthasan Antonythasan, is a refugee from war torn Sri Lanka who's paired with a new family and sent to France. As they struggle in poverty, his history threatens to catch up with him. Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post says, "Like the best fiction, it takes the most incomprehensible stories of our time and makes them hauntingly, inescapably clear."
- Also hitting our screens on Friday is Dark Horse, a shaggy dog documentary about a group of friends in a Welsh village who decide to band together to enter the world of horse racing. The unlikely true story of the "Dream Alliance" is the feel-good underdog tale of the summer. Jeannette Catsoulis of the NY Times puts it best: "Unfolding with a sincerity that dares you to roll your eyes, this warmhearted documentary by Louise Osmond wallows in its working-class roots like a horse in clover."
