Yet across crises, they are also among the first to protect communities, sustain families, and build pathways toward peace.
Women's leadership changes what becomes possible. Research from UN Women shows that when women meaningfully participate in peace processes, agreements are significantly more likely to endure. Across the world, women have expanded the work of peace to include human rights and the realities of everyday life.
That global truth is alive inside our movement. CfP women are shaping strategy, leading campaigns and educational programs, facilitating dialogue, building partnerships, mentoring younger activists, and organizing nonviolent action. | | Sometimes their leadership is impossible to miss. At a Beit Jala women's sit-in last year, Palestinian and Israeli women dressed in white stood together in grief, remembering the families in Gaza while demanding peace, safety, and equality.
Sometimes it happens quietly — in planning meetings, difficult conversations, and spaces where women care for one another. In July, a Palestinian women’s group gathered in Jericho to learn practical tools for managing stress and strengthening mutual support. As these women carry extraordinary burdens, the workshop offered something rare: a chance to breathe, feel seen, and leave with renewed strength for the road ahead. | | At the heart of this work is the partnership between Suhair and Tamar, Palestinian and Israeli colleagues who lead the Joint Nakba Remembrance Ceremony.
For Suhair, that work carries forward a family legacy: “As we worked together to create a space for remembrance, dignity, and shared humanity, I kept thinking about my grandmother, who was a peace activist. As a child, I joined her at peaceful demonstrations, and she taught me that choosing dialogue over violence is an act of courage. Leading the ceremony felt like carrying that legacy forward.” For Tamar, leadership cannot depend on always feeling hopeful: “I feel deep despair right now. I co-resist with Palestinians because I believe in solidarity, and because I cannot stand aside. I do not want to stay silent.” Working together has deepened their trust and strengthened their partnership across occupation-imposed barriers. Together, they reveal something essential: Hope is not just a feeling. It is a practice. A relationship sustained. A ceremony created. A community protected. A difficult truth spoken.
