Subject: August Update - AlMakhrour Nonviolent Resistance Camp & Educational Programs

Dear friends,

Amidst escalating tensions in the region, we continue to pursue another way. We refuse to accept violence as the solution to our despair and choose to recognise the humanity in each other, jointly co-resisting injustice and embodying an alternative reality that promotes safety and dignity for all.

On 31st July, after settlers entered the private land of the Kisiya family in alMakhrour right near our Palestinian office in Beit Jala, we sprung into action to nonviolently resist the settler takeover of the land. Every day, we have been present with Israeli and Palestinian solidarity activists, showing the settlers and the army that the family has allies to provide protective presence against their violence and documenting the injustice in real time. Read more about the situation here.

On the 12th day of the campaign, we built a tent on the mountain opposite the family's land that is being taken over and named it the "Nonviolent Resistance Camp" of AlMakhrour and are inviting activists, diplomats, politicians, journalists and anyone who believes in supporting Palestinian rights to remain on their land to come and stand with us.

Last month, we also launched a new pilot program - the Israeli Freedom School of Faith, a 3-week intensive educational program for Jewish Israelis from a religious background to engage with the issues of the conflict and the occupation and learn about nonviolence, peacemaking and human rights through a religious lens.

The group of 15 young participants met with special guests for informative lectures, visited Palestinian communities in the West Bank to see the occupation up close and engaged in study of religious texts.

Additionally, we held a 2-day seminar for the "Land Beyond the Mountains" program that invites educators to dive deeper into the conflict and the occupation in order to better educate their students on this topic. We had 18 educators join us in Jerusalem and were grateful to hear all of their positive feedback about how meaningful the seminar was for them.

We have also started a new collaboration with Sadaka-Reut hosting a 4-part educational lecture series called "Another Story", once a week in the evenings in Tel Aviv aimed at the Israeli public. The series will host speakers that spark inspiration and provide context for how we can live an alternate reality here in Israel/Palestine. The first session invited Rula Hardal, Co-Director from A Land For All and the second session hosted Maya Savir, on the violent conflicts in South Africa and Rwanda, the reconciliation processes and what we could learn from this and apply to our reality here.

Our Palestinian Freedom School launched their 3rd cohort in May with 21 participants and is continuing for 6 months. They recently went on a group hike and met for workshops and seminars on the topics of leadership, nonviolence, conflict resolution and more.

Lastly, we were featured in the latest "Peace Issue" of Meditation Magazine alongside other inspiring peace activists in Israel/Palestine and all over the world. Download a free copy of the magazine here.
