Clash Over Gay Conversion Therapy at Council Hearing

Close to 30 supporters and opponents of a bill that would ban licensed mental health providers from performing gay conversion therapy for minors gave strongly worded and sometimes emotional testimony before a D.C. City Council hearing on June 27 that lasted nearly five hours.

Representatives of at least nine LGBT advocacy organizations, several mental health professionals and two men who described themselves as survivors of conversion therapy urged the Council to pass the Conversion Therapy for Minors Prohibition Amendment Act, which was introduced last year by Council member Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3).

Supporters of the bill testified that therapy seeking to change someone’s sexual orientation from gay to straight doesn’t work, is especially harmful to minors and is strongly opposed by mainline organizations representing the medical and mental health professions.

Sexual Orientation Change Efforts for minors have been under attack for several years. Last fall, the Federal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld California's law banning Sexual Orientation Change Therapy (SOCE) for minors. In the effort to "protect" children, activists in California and New Jersey are lying about the nature of this therapy. They have lied to legislatures and rigged the Federal court system to believe that the help we provide is really child abuse...without a shred of scientific evidence to prove their allegations!

But wait! There is hope! Last year when the California bill became law, we anticipated this might happen, and so we began working on a scientific study to research the effectiveness of therapy for adolescent clients that seek sexual orientation change. If we can prove that therapy to help adolescent clients change sexual orientation is helpful and effective, it will be much more difficult for activists to advance this faulty legislation throughout the country! To date, there is not one single study that has surveyed adolescents in this therapy.

D.C. May Join California and New Jersey in Denying Ex-Gays Therapy

BY CHRISTOPHER DOYLE , OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR July 1, 2014 | 3:42 pm

On Friday, June 27 the Washington, D.C. City Council held a hearing on Bill 20-501, legislation that would prohibit minors from receiving counseling to overcome unwanted same-sex attractions. As a part of my work with Equality And Justice For All and Voice of the Voiceless, I have been following this legislation across the United States and working hard to form a coalition of ex-gays to meet with legislators and educate them on the facts of Sexual Orientation Change Effort (SOCE) therapy.

My heart feels warm as if light is shining in places that have never seen the light before, almost like the first day of a new life! A wall came down."
