Subject: Remember the Eucharist on more than Corpus Christi

What ancient symbol has always reminded Christians of the Eucharist?

The Feast of Corpus Christi

- Celebrated June 19th -

This feast honors the Holy Body and Blood of Christ, really, truly, and substantially present in the Eucharist while under the appearances of bread and wine. Originating in the thirteenth century, it is a day often marked by Eucharistic processions and adoration even to present times.

One image that is symbolic of Jesus' sacrifice in the Eucharist is that of a pelican. In times of famine, a pelican will strike and wound itself, so as to feed its young that they may live. This act has made the pelican a universal symbol for Christ in church history. We too are fed upon the Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins (Matthew 26:28 - “…for this is the blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins”). This image is often portrayed on tabernacles, altars, or church stained glass windows as a reminder of this sacrifice we participate in every Mass, and as a visual representation of Christ's offering of His own body to us.

Here at Coraggio, we've taken the Pelican - a longstanding Christian symbol - as one of our designs, demonstrating Christ's ever-present sacrifice.
