St. Juliana of Liège, a 13th-century Norbertine mystic, was an original advocate for what is now known as the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Juliana received visions from Jesus since the age of 16. She became the prioress of her convent, was deeply devoted to the real presence in the Eucharist, and confided in a few close friends who shared her spirituality. After some time, as more people heard of Juliana's visions and Christ's requests to her for a feast in honor of the Eucharist, the Bishop of Liège first celebrated Corpus Christi in his diocese.

In 1264, Pope Urban IV instituted the solemnity for the whole Church, to devote a special day to gratitude, honor, and adoration to the Blessed Sacrament.

Reverence for the Eucharist has been a vital belief since the earliest Church; before 155 A.D., St. Justin Martyr wrote a letter to the Roman Emperor defending the Christians and their way of worship. He wrote of the Eucharist:

"For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation... the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.” (First Apology, 66)
