#WeChooseReuse joins World Refill Day

We are just a few weeks away from World Refill Day! City to Sea’s global public awareness campaign is kicking-off on 16 June, to help people live with less waste. The #WeChooseReuse campaign, together with organisations celebrating World Refill Day, will be calling on individuals, businesses, brands and governments to choose to reuse and help make single-use plastic a thing of the past.

This is an opportunity to not only celebrate examples of refill around the world, but also a chance to help #WeChooseReuse push for more signatures to our commitment, which we will be using to demonstrate to policy makers that there is a demand and need for reuse in Europe.

Three Slovenian MEPs demonstrate their commitment to reuse

3 MEPs in Slovenia have demonstrated their support for reuse and the #WeChooseReuse campaign, thanks in large to #breakfreefromplastic Slovenian member, Ekologi brez meja (EBM)

After conducting targeted outreach to MEPs in Slovenia, Franc Bogovič (European People’s Party), Irene Joveva (Renew) and Milan Brglez (Socialists & Democrats), all signed the #WeChooseReuse commitment. This means not only more signatures for the campaign, but their support will contribute to the increasing political influence of the campaign, helping EU legislation support the realisation of reuse.

MiZA welcomes the first certified Zero Waste cities

MiZA welcomed their first-ever Zero Waste Certified Cities in April! Bled & Gorje in Slovenia, became the first in Europe to undergo an official audit and receive the certification for their Zero Waste efforts. The first Zero Waste Candidate City from Cyprus, Ipsonas, has also been welcomed.

There are many lessons to be learned on how to implement Zero Waste in municipalities and cities. Zero Waste Europe and #breakfreefromplastic members are invited to join a 2.5-day training on Zero Waste Cities, to complement the upcoming conference: 'Lessons for local zero waste implementation' that will be held in Brussels on the 14th of June.

Expected delays to PPWD

The revision to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive is facing further delays. The previously expected date of publication of the revisions was 20 July 2022. We are now expecting revisions to be made by Autumn 2022.

Reuse Campaigns around Europe

#GETBACK campaign launches to scale-up reuse systems

To achieve the EU’s sustainability and climate goals, the way we consume and produce needs to urgently change. Zero Waste Europe’s Get Back campaign has now been launched, calling for reuse systems to be scaled up and harmonised across Europe through well-designed systems. How do we get there? The right infrastructure and policy need to be put in place!

Learn more about how Europe can make the transition happen with ZWE’s policy recommendations and accompanying report.

Making reuse the norm

With the launch of #GetBack, Zero Waste Europe brought together reuse experts from Europe for a conversation on the most suitable packaging materials, the transition to reuse.

Catch-up on the webinar, with Larissa Copello, Gérard Bellet, Tobias Bielenstein and Nathan Dufour and learn how the EU can ensure upcoming legislation actually supports reuse.

Discover Mission Reuse

In the Netherlands, 5 million disposable cups are used every day. Line these cups up and you have 385 km worth of single-use cups, made completely of or comprising plastic.

Throughout July 2022, Plastic Soup Surfer is surfing this distance, from Amsterdam to Brussels, in his Mission Reuse Expedition to fight for the adoption of reusable cups.

From donating to joining the campaign, there are many ways to support this Expedition.

Engage & Amplify

Spread the word

Help us multiply the impact of the campaign and get as many signatures by September! Raise the topic of reuse with your decision-makers, but also with your local shops and retailers to bring change at the local and national levels. Download the Refill app and find out where you can eat, drink and shop with less waste.

Become a certified Zero Waste City

For cities who have signed the letter and are wondering what they can do next, or for any municipality wishing to engage their community to reduce waste and GhG emissions generated locally, then the Zero Waste Cities Certification is the natural next step.

The Mission Zero Academy hosts the world's-first certification for municipalities who want to become a zero waste city, whilst also being meaningfully rewarded and celebrated for their best practices.

Contact MiZA here to start your journey to becoming a Zero Waste Certified City!
