Two So-Called “Advanced Recycling” Facilities Shut Down in the U.S.

In 2023, there were eleven so-called “advanced recycling” or “chemical recycling” plants in the U.S. Today, only seven remain.

Two of these facilities – the Freepoint Eco-Systems plant in Ohio, and the Braven Environmental plant in North Carolina, both of which utilized a process called “pyrolysis” to treat discarded plastic waste – suspended operations in the past few weeks. According to The New York Times: “Both closures followed environmental violations cited by state regulators involving harmful air pollution and hazardous waste.”

“Freepoint Eco-Systems was a serial polluter and dangerous employer that caused lasting damage to the health of its workers,” said Cat Adams, Organizer at Buckeye Environmental Network in Ohio. “This environmental disaster underscores how urgently we need real solutions to the plastic pollution crisis, instead of dangerous false solutions like so-called ‘chemical recycling.’”

Fundación El Árbol and Plastic-Free Future Building in Chile

The experience of Fundación El Árbol demonstrates how global transformations begin in communities. From southern Chile, the organization has championed the recognition of grassroots recyclers, promoted zero-waste models, and built alliances that strengthen a global movement against plastic pollution.

Twelve years ago, in Concepción, a group of people decided to tackle the environmental crisis from a holistic perspective, taking into account ways of living, producing, and consuming. Thus, Fundación El Árbol was born, focused on zero waste, the regenerative economy, and empowering grassroots waste pickers.

For its executive director, Milton Neira, the mission remains “to balance the relationship between people, society, and nature.” This purpose is realized through three lines of work: the social and environmental regeneration of ecosystems; the promotion of regenerative economies and decent work—especially for grassroots waste pickers; and the promotion of zero-waste strategies to reduce waste and transform communities’ relationship with it.

The Pesticide Double Standard

For a long period of time the African continent has been adversely impacted by Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) which is often overlooked in the agricultural value chain. These chemical formulations are demonstrated to detrimentally cause severe disorders, illnesses and the deterioration of the environment which is routinely produced in regions like the European Union and dispatched to African shores and as a result these toxic chemicals contaminate the soil.

Weaponising the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to combat the cycle of HHPs should shift from regulating the user to holding the producer accountable. Crucially, Kenya’s legal framework applies directly to toxic and synthetic materials and not only plastic bottles.
