Tell the International Maritime Organization to Regulate Plastics

In May 2021, more than 1,680 tonnes of plastic pellets (called "nurdles") and 9,700 tonnes of other plastic plunged into Sri Lankan waters as a result of the X-Press Pearl cargo ship sinking. This has left a profound legacy of toxic pollution that will affect the country for decades.

The United States Supports a Global Plastics Treaty

For the first time in history, the United States announced its support for an emerging UN treaty to tackle plastic pollution across the whole plastics value chain, from extraction to disposal!

Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the United States, which is the world’s largest producer of plastic waste per capita, will join talks at the UN Environmental Assembly (UNEA) in February 2022: "It's crucial that the agreement call on countries to develop and enforce strong national action plans to address this problem at its source."

People Over Plastic: Single-Use Plastic Bans in Malawi and the United States
