Nipe Fagio Celebrates New Zero Waste Model and MRF in Zanzibar

On March 4th, in Chumbuni, Zanzibar, Nipe Fagio celebrated the introduction of a new Zero Waste Model and the first Chumbuni Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The event was officiated by Hon. Mahmoud Mohammed Mussa, the Mayor of Zanzibar, marking a significant milestone for Chumbuni in addressing the critical issue of solid waste management. The Zero Waste model aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand composting, and promote product redesign, reuse, recovery, and safe recycling.

Big Oil and the Plastics Industry Have Deceptively Promoted Recycling as a Solution

New research by the Center for Climate Integrity reveals that the plastics industry knew this plastic waste crisis was coming. And so petrochemical manufacturers worked hard to persuade the public that we could recycle our way out of the problem.


The research shows the fullest picture to date of a decades-long effort by Big Oil and the plastics industry to sell the fairy tale of plastics recycling.

EU Makes Progress Against Plastic Pellet Pollution, But More Improvements Needed

On Tuesday 19 March, the EU Parliament's ENVI Committee advanced a regulation to curb microplastic pollution by addressing pellet loss. Rethink Plastic applauded the outcome, but highlighted remaining gaps.


MEPs supported tougher regulations for the supply chain, including maritime transport, following recent sea spills. However, exemptions for some companies will exacerbate loopholes. Members will be advocating for stronger legislation in the run up to the plenary vote in April.
