Kudos to BFFP member Microplastic Research Group for mapping the illegal dumping and incineration sites of imported and local plastic waste in Adana City, Turkey! 


This important data has encouraged authorities to start visiting these sites and even taking legal actions in several cases. A new interview with Microplastic Research Group (available only in French or German) offers more details about the environmental and health risks posed by plastic dumping and incineration, and the role illegal plastic waste trade plays in driving harmful practices.

Coca-Cola named among top polluters in Hong Kong Brand audit

The Green Earth’s latest brand audit has revealed that Coca-Cola and two local brands—China Resources C’estbon and Vita—are the top plastic polluters in a Hong Kong-based Brand Audit. Over the last two years, The Green Earth cataloged more than 10,000 discarded PET plastic bottles at more than 40 beach cleanups. 


“The Hong Kong SAR Government should provide free water dispensers and encourage citizens to bring their own bottles,” according to the group’s official statement. Beverage producers should change their way of selling beverage products with an aim of reducing waste at source.”

Major Corporations Virgin Plastic

Major Corporations Commit to Cutting Virgin Plastic Use

Five major global brands—Walmart, PepsiCo, Keurig DrPepper, Mondelez International, and Target—have agreed to cut their use of virgin plastic in response to shareholder proposals filed by the non-profit foundation As You Sow over the past two months. Most recently, Walmart Inc. committed to making “significant and absolute cuts in plastic use” that will be disclosed later this year. 


Although this is encouraging news, commitments are not the same as REAL action. Let's continue holding corporations accountable for all the single-use plastic they keep pumping into the world!

Big steps in Asia! 7-Eleven Taiwan phasing out single use plastics

After campaigning for two years, Greenpeace supporters from Taiwan have finally been heard! 7-Eleven Taiwan announced it plans to phase out the use of all single-use plastic by 2050, and aims to reduce use by 10% each year. This is the first time a major convenience store chain in Asia has made a commitment to eliminate all single-use plastic!
