Break Free From Plastic Protest Unilever Involvement at COP26

On Wednesday at the COP26 climate conference grounds, advocates from the #breakfreefromplastic movement and the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA)  protested the involvement of Unilever as a Principal Partner of the UN summit, condemning the company’s role as a top plastic and climate polluter.

Last month, as we unveiled our 2021 Global Brand Audit report, we revealed the worst fast moving consumer goods brands contributing to the plastic pollution crisis. Unilever rose to third in the same year it became Principal Partner of one of the most crucial climate conferences. 99% of plastic comes from fossil fuel, and fast moving consumer goods companies, such as Unilever, play a huge role in the plastic and climate crises.

We called for the UN to remove corporate polluters from sponsoring these essential climate talks, to allow for international negotiations to take place without the influence of companies who are, in part, responsible for the climate crisis.

This evidence was packaged and presented by Fidra and the nurdle network at COP26.
