| Hey Friend, One of the biggest changes I've made to my workouts as I've gotten older is that I've stopped pushing myself to failure on every set.
Now, that doesn't mean I don't train hard anymore.
I still challenge myself in the gym, but I've learned there's a big difference between challenging your muscles and beating yourself into the ground.
When I was younger, I used to believe that the harder I trained, the better my results would be.
I'd push myself to the limit and beyond... Grinding out every last rep, and sometimes would keep going even when my form started to break down.
And while I could often get away with that approach in my teens and twenties, things change as you get older. And my big wake up call came after tearing a muscle in my back while squatting.
As you get older you need to respect your body more. Recovery becomes more important. And training to absolute failure can dramatically increases your risk of injury.
The truth is you don't need to destroy yourself in the gym to stimulate muscle growth.
These days, I generally stop my sets when I feel like I could squeeze out another rep or two if I absolutely had to.
That way, I'm still challenging my muscles - but doing so without risking unnecessary injury.
Because at the end of the day, muscle growth comes from consistent, progressive training, not from pushing yourself to total exhaustion in a single workout.
I recently recorded a short video explaining why I've changed my approach to training to failure and why you might want to reconsider how hard you're pushing yourself in the gym.
