Hello!

​For many of us, August is a time to catch our breath, but there is no shortage of important topics in the Polish optics and photonics sector. In this issue, we cover, amongst other things, Photonics4Defense 2026, an update on the Polish Research Infrastructure Map, the new ESA centre in Warsaw, developments in VCSEL technology, and interesting research findings on light modulators and luminescent materials.


At the same time, we are slowly gearing up for a busy autumn – with more conferences, workshops and industry meetings ahead of us. In the meantime, we invite you to enjoy some relaxing summer reading and – as always – to share with us any information worth bringing to the attention of the whole community.

Photonics4Defense 2026 will once again bring photonics and the defence sector together

On 10 September, during the MSPO in Kielce, Photonics4Defense 2026 will take place – an event bringing together suppliers of photonic technologies with defence equipment manufacturers, system integrators and end-users. The programme will include presentations on solutions in the fields of IR, QKD, GNSS, optoelectronics and manufacturing, as well as a B2B/B2G matchmaking session.

Update to the Polish Research Infrastructure Map

​The updated Polish Research Infrastructure Map covers 165 strategic infrastructures, amongst which optics and photonics are also strongly represented. The list includes, amongst others, the AGH University of Science and Technology’s Fibre Optics Technology Centre, the FAMO laboratories at Nicolaus Copernicus University, the pilot line for integrated mid-infrared photonics at the Military University of Technology, PolFEL, EuXFEL and ELI ERIC.

The programme for the 11th Laser Workshop is now finalised

​The programme for the 11th Workshop on Physics and Technology of Semiconductor Lasers, to be held on 18–22 October 2026 in Toruń, has been published. The programme includes invited talks, presentations on topics such as VCSELs, GaN lasers, integrated photonics and sensors, as well as a poster session. You can still submit a poster until 4 October – we look forward to your participation!

A new ESA centre is to be built in Warsaw

The European Space Agency and Poland are to establish a civil security and crisis management centre in Warsaw. The centre is intended to support European initiatives based on satellite data, secure communications and rapid crisis response. It also presents an opportunity to showcase Polish expertise in photonics – ranging from optical Earth observation and sensors to laser communications and image data processing.

Photonics at MSPO 2026 – meet industry professionals at the PPTF stand

​Polish photonics and optoelectronics will be well represented at this year’s MSPO in Kielce. At the Polish Photonics Technology Platform’s stand, companies and institutions developing technologies for security and defence will be showcasing their work – from infrared detectors and imaging systems to laser solutions, sensors and quantum technologies. We invite you to visit the PPTF stand, talk to industry representatives and take part in MSPO – one of the most important events in the defence industry in Europe.

VIGO Photonics is developing a new generation of VCSEL lasers

VIGO Photonics, as the technical leader of the PhotoGeNIC project, has developed a process for growing VCSEL structures on large germanium substrates. Replacing traditional GaAs with germanium can reduce the number of defects and the environmental impact of production, whilst improving the lasers’ performance. The technology has potential applications in, amongst other things, optical communications, LiDAR, photonics for AI and biosensors.

The blue phase as an ultra-fast light modulator 

Researchers from the Military University of Technology  and the Warsaw University of Technology have developed single-crystal structures of the blue liquid-crystal phase, which are transparent, virtually polarisation-independent and respond to an electric field in less than 90 µs. A material that converts force and sound into light

An international team including scientists from Poland has demonstrated that manganese-doped aluminium nitride can glow when subjected to friction, impact, heat and even ultrasound.
