you should never try and build muscle and burn fat at the same time...

Yep, it's true! :)

It's extremely tough to target two directly competing goals at
the same time. The physiological state your body has to be in to
burn fat (depletion) is directly opposite to the state you want
to be in for muscle growth (excess).

Here's the thing...when you look at things just a little
different in terms of timeframe, you CAN very easily build muscle
and burn fat at the same time.

The key with THAT is that you don't try and do both at the same
time...you bounce back and forth rapidly between the two goals,
which actually allows you to take advantage of the best parts of
both and the benefit of the CHANGE between them.

For example, when you're depleted and you then suddenly eat more,
your body goes into storage mode, which is PERFECT for building
muscle. And when you eat more for a bit and your metabolism is
up, that's the BEST time to pull back on calories and see the fat
loss.

Transformation" is all about and I have to say, knowing what I
know about this subject (and I base a lot of best programs on
this type of set-up), his approach is SPOT ON.
