FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Kansas City, MO – Belger Arts is pleased to present Beat the Heat, an exhibition that explores the freedoms and limitations that emerge during the intense summer heat. The exhibition opens Friday, June 5, at the Belger Crane Yard Gallery (2011 Tracy Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64108) and continues through September 5, 2026. An opening night reception will be held from 6 PM to 8 PM.

Beat the Heat includes work by Ekin Atyac and Josh Davids, Robert Bingaman, Element Ten, Erica Iman, Georgia Jankowski, and Ethan Stern, along with works from the Belger Collection by artists such as Chandra DeBuse, Susan Glaser, and Alex Siburney, and others.

Through diverse techniques and materials, the artists capture the distinctive spirit of summer, evoking both the warmth of the season and relief from its oppressive heat. Georgia Jankowski’s paintings feature realistic rippling waves, while Ethan Stern’s carved glass conjures images of coastlines. Ekin Atyac and Josh Davids contribute wave-inspired glass etchings, highlighting the human tendency to seek refuge in water when temperatures soar. Robert Bingaman’s print portrays a swimming pool amid the Los Angeles Fires, encouraging viewers to look beyond summer nostalgia and recognize the dangers of extreme heat. Erica Iman’s geological sculptures reflect untouched natural materials, offering a contrast to human-altered environments. Element Ten’s neon scapes evoke the hum of summer nightlife during reprieves from the sun. Works from the Belger Collection recall memories of warm air rushing past as one cruises down the road.

Each artist addresses a key aspect of the summer experience—whether it's vibrant nightlife, exploring the outdoors and urban environments, or finding moments of calm amid the season’s frenzy. Together, they consider the central question: “What Beats the Heat?”

About Belger Arts:

Since 2000, the Belger Arts Center has encouraged viewers to explore, question, and deepen their understanding of art and the world around them. Drawing upon the extensive Belger Collection, as well as a rich variety of local, national, and international artists, the Belger Arts Center has staged over 100 large-scale exhibitions that represent some of the best in contemporary art.

Belger Crane Yard Studios, an arts complex dedicated to providing studio and exhibition space for artists, opened in 2013. A range of programming in ceramics education and an Artist in Residence program has made Belger a center for contemporary art.

The Belger Glass Annex is the third Belger Arts location and opened to the public in October 2021. It is the first public glass studio in Kansas City of its scale and scope. The facility boasts state-of-the-art equipment and tools, a furnace that holds 300 pounds of molten glass, and three workstations. The Belger Glass Annex is primed to be a Midwest hub for glass art, education, and appreciation, strengthening Kansas City’s reputation as an arts destination.
