Resident Artist Spotlights

Michael Carson

2025-2026 Foundation Glass Resident

Prior to Michael Carson’s glass residency, he participated in the Belger Arts-Kansas City Museum Chandelier Project in 2023. Carson remarked that the experience "let me know what's here in Kansas City, opened my eyes, and implanted the thought that I'd come back here to do more work." His dedication has been evident throughout his residency, where he's led glassblowing experiences, demos, and taught a special topic class on rolling cane, sharing his expertise and fostering community engagement.

In addition, Carson has experimented with uranium glass and other materials, further expanding his artistic practice. His interest in the intersection between fragility and function is beautifully illustrated in the collection of glass goblets he's creating for the Annual Resident Exhibition, which opens on June 5, 2026, at the Belger Crane Yard Gallery.

Hannah Schelb

2024-2026 Foundation Ceramics Resident

In her second consecutive residency term Hannah Schelb is building upon the work featured in last year’s resident exhibition. Rather than focusing solely on past interpersonal relationships, Schelb now draws inspiration from the connections she's cultivated within the Belger Arts Community. Through her "Jar Person Project" she creates small porcelain portraits of community members. This shift brings fresh perspectives to her practice and celebrates the unique energy of the Community.

The project is a collaborative blend of creativity, community, and commerce that reflects the multifaceted life of a working artist. Schelb explains, "Outlined in a contract completed before I start making the jar, each participant has a choice in what happens after the piece is done. They can choose to buy and keep the jars after the resident show coming up in June or . . . choose for [the work] to be put up for sale, with the participant determining the price.”

Work by Carson, Schelb, and all Foundation Residents' will be on view during Belger Arts’ Thirteenth Annual Resident Exhibition, opening on First Friday, June 5, 2026.
