The New Magick Of Demonic Astrology • July 16

E.A.: As a practicing magician, I look at your new book Qliphothic Astrology and go, "Wow, the information here is very accessible, and can go as deep as the reader wants to take it." That's awesome. I mean, congrats on the book as a whole.

You do a good job of explaining it without the math, explaining really the spirit behind the numbers and behind the equations.

First off, we can touch on so many different topics in this book, but one that really popped out at me is you said that you see everybody talking about connecting with the angels of an astrology chart. And you replied, "Well, nobody has ever done this with the demons of the chart, and so here we go!" That's a stroke of genius, and secondly, what did you find out as you did that and applied this system to finding demons?

Bill: I discovered something that was very interesting, that gets debated quite a bit, which is: are the demons standalone entities, or are they negative reflections of the angels?

And through this work, it came down on the side that they are their own autonomous beings, they standalone. They're not really negative reflections of angels, and that's its own subject that we can go into for quite a while, but I found them very dynamic with personalities just as strong as the angels had.

E.A.: That brings us to the big picture of the Qliphoth, because it's understood — or misunderstood — that the Qliphoth are not only the inverse aspects of each planet or each Sephiroth, but they're made chaotic, they're turned out of control.

Do you agree with that definition, or have you redefined that through your work?

Bill: I agree with part of that. I wouldn't say they're chaotic and out of control, but the rest of what you said I agree with on point. They're seen that way because they challenge us in ways that have been left behind.

The Qliphoth are the broken shells, where the light descended. Therefore, a lot of times people see that as negative, but in reality, it's more like remnants of what came before. Because you couldn't have a vessel if there wasn't something there before.

When we shift our modern minds into working with them, that's where the challenge can come in; what we're working with is almost counter-intuitive, yet more primal, it's more focused on the roots of everything.

E.A.: You tapped into this whole concept. The common theme is that there have been struggles for both of us and there have been successes. Both are necessary and tied together. You can't have the successes without first breaking some eggs.

I think the Qliphoth really dives into that, possibly too on the nose for most people. It's almost too obvious of a working with the dark psyche, and that's probably why it's so feared — it's fear of the self, not fear of the demons.

That returns to your main discovery: that these beings are not only reflections of the angels, but autonomous beings. Is that clear?

Bill: Right, when a lot of people work with the Qliphoth, they work with the Qliphoth themselves. So, you work with A'arab Zaraq, you work with Satariel. This material conjoins with the Tunnels of Set, for which there are far fewer books and videos on that subject. It marries the two together, and it gives you a more comprehensive look at the entire Tree of Nightside.

E.A.: The 32 Paths of the Tree (22 Tunnels) — first off, as I was reading that, it seemed to pick up on Kenneth Grant and push his ideas further. This is definitely not a derivative of Kenneth Grant, but it picks up where he left off in a sense.

Bill: You hit the nail on the head. Grant was a big inspiration for the book. Not just me reading it and saying, "Hey, there's a gold mine of material here." But also, numerous times in the research process, when I got stumped looking for sources he used or direction, I would perform an invocation to the spirit, and then within 10-15 minutes, I'd receive the answers I was looking for.

E.A.: Isn't that amazing? It's like magick.

I was just having a conversation with a friend of mine who is a daily devoted practitioner. It's interesting how the things that are miraculous and magickal, when you experience them on a regular basis, it's almost a mundane, like, "Ah-ha. Of course these things are happening." The superstition is removed and it becomes an expectation. "Of course phenomena are going to happen when I perform these rituals, because it's science. That is the equation, so to speak."

I love that the astrology presented in your book Qliphothic Astrology is not just focused on the receptive end of it. That's one main feature that makes what you're doing black magick, is that it's actually supposed to be used in ritual — that you can take these elements and apply them ritualistically. Can you talk a little bit about that?

Bill: Yeah, one of the pet peeves I have of critics of astrology is that they view it as very fatalistic, as if what you see in the chart is necessarily going to happen. In that situation, those people have surrenderer the idea of free will. They surrender their freedom to see something in a chart and rebel against it by saying, "Screw this. I don't want that to happen. I'm going to do everything in my power to change it in line with my will."

I like to emphasize using astrology proactively, because not a lot of people do it, and that's where the potency lies.

E.A.: That's the nature of every prediction, there is that fatalism embedded into the modern perspective of your horoscope. Maybe instead of viewing a horoscope as dogma, perhaps view it as giving you green and red flags to watch out for and then navigate.

Bill: Exactly, when I write my daily horoscopes, I write it more like a celestial weather forecast, i.e., "Here's what's going on. These patterns align with your astrological sign. and you're in charge of your reaction to it entirely.

E.A.: Absolutely. Now back to the Tunnels of Set. When people pathwork the Tunnels, you know that you've found a magician who's serious about black magick. So, what are these tunnels? What do they mean? And how do you work with them?

Bill: I got exposed to the term and the idea through Kenneth Grant's saga. I had already read Aleister Crowley at the time, but Grant's work gave me a new appreciation for Liber 231, where Crowley calls them the Scales of the Serpent. This would have been 20-25 years ago. There was very little material out there, and it was hard to find, because it was basically pre-internet. I fell in love with the mystique of it. These are inverse reflections of the path on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. This is where certain things dwell and crawl. Crowley did, I don't know, maybe 1500 words on the Scales of the Serpent — Grant took those 1500 words and transformed it into this huge magnum opus that runs through all nine of his Typhonian books.

I was always impressed by that because I thought, "Holy shit! You can take this little sliver of nothing and turn it into something flipping huge? I got to learn this skill." So, when we put the book together, I felt like I had a chance to go back and kind of indulge that guilty pleasure.

E.A.: Cool, because you're right. He took this tiny, almost like a side-mention — he took it and went, "Boom! Lets rip this open and explore it." Then you ripped into it even further with astrology.

It's interesting because we talked a couple years ago about how there is a planetary or cosmic shift that's underway and everything is changing. One of the biggest changes is that we are moving toward an era of cooperation, collaboration, and consent. And with that, you're bringing different things that possibly never have met before and marrying them. And that term, "marriage," is a powerful alchemical symbol, and you do marry specifically the 32 paths (22 Tunnels) with your Qliphothic Astrology in such a beautiful way.

Bill: To prove you right on a whole new level, I want to let everybody know that we're recording this on the full moon. And people would say, "Oh, well, that's cool." Well, let's take it a step further, this particular full moon is aligned with the galactic core, the galactic center of the Milky Way.

When you talk about magnification, that's exactly what this is about. One of my goals in formulating this codex was to have a one-stop reference to all things astrological for the Qliphoth so you didn't have to be in the boat with people like you and me probably were where we'd get introduced to a topic 10, 15, years ago, you'd find one chapter in one book about it, another chapter in another book about it, with no complete guide on it. In the past, there was no one-stop resource.

Now, this is that resource. I spent a lot of time on the Tunnels for that reason, because I wanted it to be an introduction to Grant's writings. I wanted it to be a fantastic companion to the other Become a Living God grimoire that talk about the Qliphoth. I wanted it to tie into Crowley's writings, The Shadow Tarot by Linda Falorio, and a number of works by Asenath Mason and others, that explore and innovate Qliphothic Magick.

My vision was basically saying, "I want to work with this, let me grab this book off the shelf. Okay, this is my starting point. Now I can go to these other resources."

It means a lot to me that this grimoire concentrates on the Tunnels in particular.
