Once you move from experimenting with magick and practicing magick and mastering magick, and you cross the threshold over to being magick, your whole world becomes your temple, and as you sit and breathe and focus your mind, the elements stir around you, and you were armed with unstoppable force.
This “Lightning Rod Effect” can be felt in your temple, absolutely. As these powers coalesce around you and come down through you and ground through you, you are the lightning rod.
Even as a spirit materializes in the temple before you, it does so by being fed by your power, your force, your life, your mind.
All that is not visible, all that is not known, all that is unknowable can be made manifest here through us.
Now, I do a lot of rituals. I think I probably do more rituals than almost anybody that I know. In addition to my daily meditations, my daily magickal disciplines, I'm also engaged in this Gatekeeper Pathworking, trying to pull whatever secrets of power I can comprehend and hold on to and understand and communicate - requiring, of course, divination, evocation, soul travel, pact workings, possessions, channeling, automatic writing, etc.
I also perform basic rituals for my personal benefit to make things go more smoothly in my life.
I perform rituals to help heal those I love and to destroy those I hate.
I perform rituals to open doors and close doors constantly for myself, and I also perform rituals for clients.
In doing so, I had a really good chance to intimately know the various phases and states that are reached and experienced and presenced within ritual.
So, the fact that I'm performing a ritual on a daily basis, sometimes multiple rituals a day, and then carrying my magick out into the world with me, is that I have become intimately familiar with the process of diving into that ritual state: all of the unique shifts and turns that your mind makes and that your body makes; the physiological shifts; and then the environmental shifts as the room becomes cooler or hotter; more humid or drier; or when poltergeist activity starts to move things on the outskirts of the temple.
Most of us enter into the Left Hand Path and into black magick for control: we want to control the outcome, as well as the specifics of how we get to our desired outcome. So, we control what colors of candles we're using, what spirits we're calling, what incense we're burning, what conjurations we use, what godnames we call, and so on.
The ritual itself is one structured control system that we're using to give the mind something to latch onto while the inner self really goes deep, and that's where all the work really happens.

But, once you've fallen into that Theta-Gamma Sync, once your head is swimming and you start to lose your ability to tell whether you're standing or sitting or tumbling upside down, you're no longer in the brainwave state that's addicted to control. You can actually feel a release, and then true power comes in.
You see, power and control are not necessarily the same thing.
Power is the ability to do work, the ability to cause change.
Control is a head game that we play with ourselves of micromanaging the details rather than having the experience.
In all of my magick, I of course have to come into it with a goal, an outcome that I'm trying to achieve, a specific force or entity that I'm trying to work with. I have to have a very clear, very strong desire for what I want. Then once the ritual begins, once I take my bell and ring it, I am clearing the air, and clearing myself to be a clean, clear, sharp vessel for the Powers of Darkness.
In order to really hold and have and become true power, you do have to give up control, because control, once again, is a mental process, not a magickal process, nor a spiritual process.
Who you are is not who you planned to be. Maybe some aspects have fallen into place and fallen into line, but where you're at right now has come to you because of a lot of accidents, a lot of things that you didn't expect, a lot of changes that maybe you hoped wouldn't happen, and probably a lot of things not going your way.
What you are capable of becoming is beyond your capability of even imagining. What that means is that if you're trying to control the outcome, whether we're talking about the outcome of your Ascent or the outcome of a single ritual, I can guarantee you that your thoughts, your conscious understanding of the situation, is not perfect enough.
As soon as you're able to drop mind and to release your micromanagement of the details, then you truly do become the Lightning Rod. At that point, the ritual may not even take shape like you thought it would. It might form itself into another ritual altogether. I've even sometimes found that the outcome that I'm trying to push the ritual towards will become unimportant, or I will realize mid ritual the flaw in approaching that ritual the way that I am.
The more that we give up our idea of what control is, the more power we can actually have and hold and use and become.
Any sorcerer that's been around the sun a few times knows that at first you pick the magick hat up and you put it on, and you think you're wearing the magick hat, and that now you can control everything with that magick hat. What you don't realize is that the hat is wearing you!
Magick itself, especially these Powers of Darkness, are very real. They have their own plan. They have their own mind. And they have a place set aside for you, and a mission prepared for you. You have a quest that you have yet to accept, and they're just waiting for you to stop worrying so much about control and to start becoming power!
