Hello Friend,

And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back at you.

The Beast — when I say that, what images does it bring to mind? Where do your thoughts go when it comes to the idea of the beast, especially in context of modern occultism? Who comes to mind, of all of the personalities on the planet? Why does your mind seek this information? How do you work with the beast in your magical practice? Take a moment and firmly root it in your mind’s eye and your consciousness, then proceed.

At the root of all of that is Abaddon. Why do I say that? Why am I confident in this view? It’s a rather tragic and unfortunate truth, really. The fact of the matter is that the source about Abaddon comes to us from the Book of Revelations in the New Testament of the Judeo-Christian Bible. I’m not saying there are other sources, but rather this material is the most widely circulated source on the planet at this time. Luckily the advent of social media and the interconnectivity of the World Wide Web is changing that as more lights are being brought to sources other than this, but by and large for the last two thousand years, if someone knew about Abaddon, Revelations was where they learned it. After all, that bible is one of the best-selling books of all time.

This idea has been pushed forward at various points over the last few centuries through the writings of Dee, Crowley, and others, and as a matter of fact, the beast in Revelations left such a lasting impression on a young Edward Alexander Crowley, that he based not only a magical motto on it, he adopted it in his system of Thelema. And yet if you follow the history, you see that it is Abaddon, gazing up from the bottom of the pit, glowing eyes studying you.

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.

This shows us that always lurking in the shadows has been Abaddon, yet not widely known. The last point is important because his presence has always been there, but not necessarily his name. Any time one has worked with the beast in whatever fashion, they have in a way, been working with Abaddon in different guises in many different cultures. There are little pearls of wisdom like that sprinkled throughout the Western Esoteric Tradition, and in my essay “Ululate Exitium” we will take a closer look at this archetype and concept from the perspective of where things stand today. In some ways this will be a very Jungian look at him, but in others it will be portraying Abaddon as a diamond with many facets, all of which can lead to greater understanding as a whole.

It has only been over the last two centuries or so that the beast in the way we understand today has been widely circulated and known about in occultism. This does not mean that Abaddon wasn’t worked with or discussed, but rather he wasn’t as widely known as he is now. As far back as the Renaissance, this archetype was worked with in the form of Coronzon in Enochian magick, but other than that, he quietly fades into the background until the mid-eighteen hundreds. As Eliphas Levi fueled the French Occult Revival, Baphomet came to the fore, and some could argue for a correspondence between both Baphomet and Abaddon, but that is something for the individual seeker to decide for themselves regarding preferred perspectives.

From there his notoriety spread like wildfire in a lot of different ways, but the rise of Abaddon was assured, and it simply became a question of when he would break into the mass consciousness, not if he would. That time began in earnest with Aleister Crowley, but got amplified by modern magicians and authors. A massive signal boost was given to him in many ways, as is also true of other popular and recognizable Left Hand Path entities over the last fifty years since the neopagan revival took root and developed in the West. The climax of his ascent is with this tome. Never before has such a compendium been created, and I am honored to be a part of it. Not only will every author in this book have their particular thoughts on Abaddon, but in Ululate Exitium, you will see a fractal image.
