Hello Friend,

When it comes to tarot divination, most people are afraid of drawing the Death card. Of course, this is because they think that it means literal death of a loved one, a relationship, or even their own death.

After learning more about the layered interpretations of the Death card, though, most tarot readers learn that this card warns of change and growth more often than foretelling a coming funeral.

But, I can totally relate to what people feel when they first see the Death card in a spread, because up until a couple of weeks ago, one specific tarot card would make my entire body tense as panic zapped through me about what I assumed the card was predicting.

This card is the Nine of Swords.

What I *Thought* Nine of Swords Meant

Referring to the tarot cheatsheets and the self-study manuals on divination, I learned that the Nine of Swords was associated with disaster, with cruelty and with anxiety.

Without fail, every time the Nine of Swords appeared in a reading, my whole world would soon after start falling apart and spinning out of control at the same time. Often, by the time I was turning cards over on the table, this pattern had already begun, and the tarot was offering a validation of what I already feared.

As a note: things falling apart is usually more closely associated with the Tower card, but what makes the Nine of Swords different - and seemingly much worse! - than the Tower card is that the Tower signifies events falling apart of their own accord, or by natural forces, or by our own lack of planning and foresight, whereas the Nine of Swords signifies chaos, suffering, and injury to ourselves at the hands of other people, metaphorically stabbing us with swords over and over. In addition to the pain and upset caused by others, the malevolent power of the Nine of Swords is magnified by ourselves as we blame ourselves, shame ourselves, and berate ourselves, leaving us with debilitating anxiety, depression, and hopelessness.

But, the underlying takeaway is that the suffering is not just the cause of circumstance. It is the result of intentional cruelty, usually inflicted by trusted friends or loved ones.

In reading tarot for other people, if they drew the death card, I could always find a positive message, a piece of advice for the transition, and I could dull the shock of someone seeing that card for the first time.

If the reading turned up the Ten of Swords, I could similarly find a positive spin: at least with the Ten of Swords, the cycle is completed, everything is ruined, and now you can rebuild.

But with the Nine of Swords, all I could see was being stuck in this stasis of misery while your enemies keep stabbing. I hated the Nine of Swords, but try as I might, it just kept surfacing in my readings for myself, and in other Divinators’ readings for me.

Usually, when the same card keeps showing up, many tarot readers will call this your “Significator” card, or the card that is most linked with you throughout your life.

I didn't want to admit that the Nine of Swords was my card, even though it's showed up more than any other card in every spread I've ever done.

Beelzebub Left This Card As A Breadcrumb & It Couldn’t Have Been A More Perfect Sign

In my recent pathworking with Beelzebub, he kept inserting the image of the Nine of Swords card into my mind, for no apparent reason. Over the space of three days, it was basically all I could think about!

Knowing that these things are never accidental, I followed that bread crumb, studying that card and its many interpretations… which is something that I had avoided doing, afraid that giving it too much attention would evoke the negative effects of the card into my life.

Beelzebub opened my mind, and opened the paths of knowledge, and now I know what this card has been trying to tell me, this whole time, my whole life.

As each element, or each suit of cards progresses, from ace to ten, the activity of that element increases.

In most decks, the suit of swords is associated with fire, so as the numerals increase, fire is heaped upon fire. As the numbers ascend, the energy and activity of the situation is as intense as it can be, until it culminates with the Ten of Swords, through which the fiery sword energy everything is ruined, everything is destroyed, and your life is at rock bottom.

When you draw the Nine of Swords, you're almost there; you are falling towards the bottom and you can see it and you're about to get fucking smashed by it.

What I didn’t understand was that this card was not just a prophecy, but also comes with an instruction.

The true meaning of the Nine of Swords, the advice behind it is that there's already too much action happening, there are too many people reacting to too many forces; there are too many pokers in the fire, and there’s just way too much fire to begin with.

In short, there's too much action.

You doing anything in that moment is going to just be one sword too many. It's going to tip the energy of the situation over to ruin.

What to do when this card is prevalent is nothing. That’s right: do nothing. Don’t see this as simply ‘doing nothing, though. What you are actually engaging here is calculated inaction. You've set this whirlwind of power into motion in your life. You called these ancient entities into this world, and even by the very act of ritual, you are stirring the elements around you, and what began as a breeze could easily become a tempest.

As the magician who has brought the storm into pass, you need to stand back, take your hands off of the problem, and let your magic work.

When things start going crazy, you going crazy isn't going to help. You jumping in and trying to get your fingers all over the business is not going to help it.

Just stand back.

Calculated inaction.

If you've drawn the Nine of Swords, it is time to stop moving. Just stand still to take a breath and watch all of the pieces fall into place.
