Tarot is not simply a tool of divination. Tarot is a map of both macrocosmic and microcosmic reality. It has taken the various powers and energies and attributes of all of existence and has divided it up into these different categories. Each category or current is then represented by a specific card.

When You Learn Tarot You Are Learning About Reality |

Placing the cards in specific areas signifies how that particular energy is effecting that particular aspect of your life.
Laying the cards down in a spread to foretell the future or get some clarity on the present is a great use of the tarot for divination.
But, as you learn the tarot, you’re not just learning the definitions of the cards that you can then use for divination… you’re learning about the different attributes or aspects of reality.
You are therefore learning how you can use these cards, or more appropriately how you can use the information gathered through the reading, for your benefit in interacting with reality.

Let me tell you something about revelation and prophecy: You would not receive it if there wasn’t anything that you could do about it!
A lot of people get into a fatalistic mindset with divination, thinking that what the cards or runes or bones tell them is unchageable, that it is somehow fated.
The future is still in motion with every action that we take, influenced by our deeds as well as our beliefs, our thoughts, and our intentions.
What the cards are telling you is the most likely outcome if you continue to do the things that you are doing.
This is why, in my Mastering Divination Training Course, I give several different spreads that you can use to determine the various different paths that the future can take, as well as to gain advice on how to push the future in the direction that is going to be best for you.
The most important thing that you can do in training yourself to have power over your life is to avoid getting into a fatalistic mindset.

Our lives are the way they are because that is how we have created them! It doesn’t matter what happens to you; it matters how you respond to what happens to you.
Once we learn how to do that, we can start acting upon reality, rather than just reacting to it.
This is one of the most powerful aspects of the tarot. It gives you a symbolic representation of the specific powers and attributes of reality.
For example, if do a tarot reading for my finances, and I pull a card like “The Hanged Man” or the Ten of Swords (Ruin), those are going to be scary cards to have show up.

The only reason that these cards will show up in a reading is to tell you something that might happen, that you can then take steps to avoid.
If this wasn’t the case, why would you do the reading at all?
Instead of just assuming that the first spread is the final word on the matter, I always like to follow up each spread with another that will clarify the situation, usually using different types of tarot spreads to target specific concerns. What we are doing with divination is gathering information. Take the time to do as many readings as you need to determine what exactly is coming your way, and what actions - magickal or mundane - that you need to take to have the best possible outcome.

And you can even use the tarot as a magickal tool as well as a divinatory tool.
All that you need to do is look through the deck and find the cards that represent the energy or situation that you’d like to manifest in your life. As always, do this in a positive, proactive way. So, if you want to avoid illness, you’d find the card that represents healing, like The Sun, The Ace of Cups, or Five of Cups. If you want to manifest material wealth, cards like The Emperor, Ace of Pentacles, or Knight of Pentacles would be perfect!
Hold the card in front of you, gaze at it, and envision as clearly as you can the outcome that you wish to achieve. See it happening in your magickal imagination until you can feel that it has already happened, until you are certain of the positive end result.
You can even test whether or not the ritual has worked by doing one last reading, and you’ll likely see that the prediction of the future has already changed. You will also get some very valuable insight into the physical actions that you need to take to compliment the success of the tarot magick spell that you just cast!
