Subject: FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT FOR RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

Edition 13  Volume 7  2015
Fire Risk Management for Residential Buildings

Prior to our last edition where we discussed the risk assessment of fire in residential buildings, we would identify the most common causes of fire and recommend potential solutions.

Fire tetrahedron is the inhibited chain of reaction that must occur before fire takes place. The existence of oxygen, heat and fuel must be present before fire outburst can occur. In every building, these components are usually present which implies that it is invariable for every building to have a good fire extinguisher installed.

Fire extinguishers are among the items we own that we do not want to use. These devices end up on the wall or at the corner of the room gathering dust. This makes other residents doubt if they really need one but the truth is that we all need one while some of us need more than just one.

In other to choose an appropriate fire extinguisher, you must first identify the hazards that are present, you must recognize even trace amounts of each fire classification to determine the proper number of extinguishers required.
Next, you must determine the size of the fire extinguisher and establish the quantity of extinguishers needed by the coverage allowed per Local and National fire codes. Lastly, you must distribute the portable fire extinguishers per the allowable travel distance to each fire extinguisher.

information to estimate the risk of loosing individuals, property and environment from identified hazards, the comparison with
targets, and the search for optimal solutions.

Fire extinguishers  play a critical role in protecting the environment by controlling fires at their very early stages. It is dangerous for any building to be without an extinguisher installed in it. More so,.The availability of accessible and working fire extinguishers assures that the highest possible percentage of fires will be controlled with the minimal environmental impact possible. Replacing the inefficient and carbon-intensive manual extinguisher inspection methodology with electronically monitored extinguishers will have significant positive impacts on the environment.

Causes of Fire Outbreak

  • Electrical and Heating Malfunctions Worn electrical cords and faulty wiring are also a major cause of commercial fires.
  • Smoking - Even in a smoke-free building, you can't watch what your employees do all the time. It only takes one cigarette to start a fire.
  • Improper Storage - Most fires in storage properties are not in warehouses but are in garages, barns, silos, and small outbuildings. Many fires are started when flammable materials are stored too close to a heat source.
  • Cooking - Kitchen fires in restaurants are the most common source of fire in non-residential buildings, often because the grease traps, hood suppression system, and exhaust vents for commercial stoves, broilers, and deep fat fryers are not properly cleaned and maintained.
