Subject: FIRE RISK FOR RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

Edition 12  Volume 6  2015
Fire Risk for Residential Buildings

Fire is detrimental for the development of human society. It has become an inevitable part of human civilization. Among different types of disasters, fire constitutes a significant threat to life and property in urban and rural areas.
Creating an atmosphere where people are confident in their
abilities to assess and fight fires has a positive knock-on effect on
them. People feel safer when there is a planned way to come out of a disaster.

Fire risk assessment in buildings comprises of three steps which includes
  • fire risk identification,
  • fire risk analysis, and
  • fire risk evaluation.
The risk assessment of a system consists of the use of all available information to estimate the risk of loosing individuals, property and environment from identified hazards, the comparison with
targets, and the search for optimal solutions.

To a limited extent, a fire hazard assessment (FHA) is performed whenever fire or life safety design or evaluation is undertaken. When making decisions regarding the capabilities of engineered systems, the design must consider the type, quantity, and location of combustibles in the area protected.

A knowledge of the fire tetrahedron (which will be discussed in our next edition) and the most common causes of fire will assist you in identifying potential fire situations.

Fire Safety Tips
To survive a building fire:
If you get caught in smoke, get down and crawl, taking short breaths through the nose. Cleaner, cooler air will be near the floor. Get Low – And Go.

Before opening any doors, feel the door knob. If it is hot, don’t open the door. If it is cool, open it slightly, and if heat or heavy smoke are present, close the door and stay in the room.

If the nearest exit is blocked by fire, heat or smoke, go to another exit. Always use an exit stairwell, not an elevator. Elevator shafts may fill with smoke or the power may fail, leaving you trapped. Stairwell fire doors will keep out fire and smoke-if they are closed-and will protect you until you get outside.
