Work from a Life Model

in Term 1

For Term 1, we bring students another chance to work from a life model, taught by regular guest teacher Jenny Pollak.

Working from the Life Model with Jenny Pollak, Sundays: 9 February – 6 April 2025, 10:30am - 3:30pm

The human body is one of the most challenging, eloquent and time honoured subjects for the exploration of artistic expression. Jenny will be encouraging students to think about how they might push their work towards a deeper expression.

Jenny will challenge students to create work that goes beyond merely accurately representing the body. The main objective of this class is to support students in developing a truly personal sculptural language – a language that can borrow from the whole spectrum of artistic expression from realism to abstraction.

Jenny will be encouraging students who have previously worked with the figure not to fall back into old habits, but to engage with the life study with intention and courage.

While the class is not focused on the anatomical study of the body, deep observational skills are essential to the realisation of the finished work and will form a part of the discussions held over the course of the nine week term. Click here for more info and to enrol.

Clara Street Gallery News

In 2025, artist and TBSSS carving teacher Elena Murgia will be coordinating and curating the Clara Street Gallery. We thank Elena for taking on the space and we are look forward to seeing lots of sculpture in 2025!

Currently in the Gallery, is a group exhibition featuring sculptures created in Usama Alnassar's Intensive Marble Carving Workshops.

Human Expression in Marble

"This exhibition aims to celebrate the work of students and guest marble carving teacher Usama Alnassar.

The theme is timeless, the human expression trapped in a stone or released from it.

From figurative works to some degree of abstraction in a couple of small-scale torsos, these sculptures capture the eloquence of representation.

The exhibition showcases the carving process from refined to unfinished pieces, inviting the viewer to both look at the intermediate phases where possible alternatives can be considered, and to simply engage with the beauty of the medium itself as the figure emerges from its roughness." - Elena Murgia

If you are interested in showing your sculptures in Clara Street Gallery, please get in touch via admin@tbsss.org.au to find out more. We welcome solo and group exhibitions.

We thank the City of Sydney for their ongoing support of TBSSS, through the Accommodation Grants Program.
