Karen Alexander's work on recent public sculpture, Maria Lock and Robert on Dharug Country

Congratulations to sculptor and TBSSS teacher Karen Alexander on her work on the recent large scale public artwork on the M7 Motorway on Dharug land, Maria Lock and Robert on Dharug Country.

Maria Lock was a Dharug matriarch and landowner who broke barriers in education and pursuing Aboriginal rights, as well as being the first Aboriginal woman in a legal marriage with a convict settler, the carpenter Robert Lock. These two bronze figures were designed in collaboration with Dharug artist and descendant of Maria Lock, Jasmine Seymour, alongside Balarinji Studio, as part of twelve new Aboriginal public artworks along Western Sydney’s M7 Motorway honouring Maria's story, her family's role in the Frontier Wars and the World Wars, and their continued enrichment of Dharug culture.

Karen Alexander, who teaches at TBSSS, worked with Jasmine Seymour and Balarinji Studio to "translate a line drawing of the two figures into clay in-the-round, as a maquette that was scaled up into the final sculptures. It was important to me to be able to work directly with the story-holders to bring the sculpture alive. What an honour to work on these two sculptures to bring this important history into form."

Congratulations to Karen for your involvement in this recent large-scale public sculpture!

Virginia Lloyd-Tait's Retrospective Exhibition, on until 12 September

15 August—12 September | Weekdays, 9:30am—1:30pm | Clara Street Gallery, 1A Clara St Erskineville

Virginia Lloyd-Tait's incredible 30-year retrospective exhibition of sculptures opened at Clara Street Gallery earlier this month. Fellow sculptor and TBSSS student Martin Williams reviews her exhibition, which is showing until 12 September:

"An odyssey of blood, sweat, and tears. When you look at her work you gain the sense of hard work she has applied together with her eyes, hands, and body, an intense labouring that has achieved a result with which Virginia can be eventually satisfied. In this powerful exhibition we are surrounded by women, works beautifully curated by Elena Murgia, where the essence lies in an exploration of the figure.

"It’s easy to see an important inspiration has been her family, where more emotion and tears take over. A bust of her mother, who died early, and one of her sister, upon whom in childhood, she came to depend. Both stand alongside her beloved husband Roger, the latter portrayed in Carrara marble. Then another emotion—a recent striking figure in marble of her daughter in pregnancy, and sitting by, a tiny baby, the head of her beautiful grandson.

"In these works we experience a particularly human exploration of emotion that unfolds before us, an intimacy that she makes accessible to her audience. And Virginia, blood, sweat, and tears included, is having a lot of fun doing it."
