Did you know Christmas in July began right here in the Blue Mountains? Back in 1980, Gary Crockett, owner of the California Guesthouse in Katoomba (now the Mountain Heritage Hotel), was hosting a group of Irish visitors during a chilly Blue Mountains winter.
As they sat around a roaring fire, they remarked that it felt far more like Christmas than the heat of an Australian December. Inspired by their comments, Gary organised a traditional Christmas dinner complete with roast turkey, plum pudding, crackers, carols and festive decorations.
The idea was an instant success.
What began as one special dinner soon grew into Christmas in July, earlier known as Yulefest. Other hotels embraced the tradition, and today thousands of visitors travel to the Blue Mountains each winter to experience the magic of a cosy Christmas in the cold. One simple idea, born beside a fireplace, became one of Australia's most loved winter traditions. CHECK out some of the great options below.
