NEW PPP RULES
FOR GIG WORKERS

The Small Business Administration (SBA) has new rules for PPP that allows Sole Proprietors to apply for more money than before. Many sole-proprietors, gig performers, 1099 independent contractors filed for (and tried to file for) the PPP loan/grant this spring only to find out that you were not going to get much money or no money at all. However, this second round of PPP has a new way for you to calculate your income and thus the amount of your PPP. Under the old rule your income listed on line 31 of our Schedule C determined your loan amount. This was your NET profit. This amount was small for many of you who itemize. The new rule (if you file a Form 1040) allows you to use your GROSS income to calculate your loan amount. This is your income before any deductions which is line 7 on Schedule C. ARTS ADVOCATES TURN UP THE HEAT ON STATE FUNDING
SUPPORT 6119

Constitutional law, anatomy, pre-engineering classes for kids who want to learn dance and jazz music. Student programming that has gone from a red-carpeted auditorium to a virtual stage. New play development that hasn’t stopped during a global pandemic. A vision for the state’s COVID-19 recovery that isn’t complete without its museums, theaters, and orchestras. Those are a few of the programs that over 100 theater and museum directors, arts administrators, teachers, and individual artists championed last month as they gathered in support of proposed House Bill 6119. Proposed by Madison and Durham State Rep. John-Michael Parker, the bill seeks to raise the percentage of the state’s occupancy tax that goes into the Connecticut Tourism Fund from 10 percent to 25 percent. That extra 15 percent currently goes into the state’s general fund. Read full article...
WHY MORE DIGITAL ARTISTS ARE EMBRACING CRYPTOCURRENCY

Christie’s is auctioning its first-ever virtual artwork and accepting Ethereum as payment. Andrés Reisinger sold $450,000 worth of “impossible furniture” using non-fungible tokens. What does this mean for digital artists? The authenticity of each item is verified using a non-fungible token (NFT), which are digital assets that represent a wide range of one-of-a-kind tangible and intangible items. NFTs are individually identified on a blockchain, which means that each one contains distinguishing information and is easily verifiable. For artists, using NFTs to sell work on a digital platform directly to collectors heralds the rise of a transformative economic model. It not only eliminates intermediaries like galleries that keep half the initial selling price, but allows creators to determine their portion of secondary-market sales in perpetuity. Read SURFACE Article here...

REAL ART REAL ARTISTS

RaRa - Real Art Real Artists is a new Creative Business member of the Cultural Alliance that offers services to artists. RaRa has an online directory of independent artists and galleries that is searchable by location and then filterable by type of art, theme, style, medium and price. The goal is to support local artists by connecting them with consumers in their community. An artist can create a member profile that allows them to have a searchable artist profile, giving them a page that includes information about the artist, including a bio, a gallery of work, links to their email, social media, website, videos and appointment calendar. Consumers can purchase art directly through the website by doing a search for art for sale. Art events and shows can also be added to the website. The website has integrated technology that allows a consumer to see a work of art in a photo of their room or in a staged space. Once buyers find that perfect piece, they can contact the artist directly to see the art in person or purchase directly through the site. See her website.
