WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
DAWN KUBIE

Dawn Kubie is a Trumbull-based portrait photographer who specializes in working with actors, actresses, bands, dancers, models, and musicians in Connecticut and New York. She's also a freelance event photographer for the Connecticut Post online. Dawn studied voice at Berklee College of Music for two years and graduated Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in research psychology. She worked as a paralegal for 17 years - then she discovered (or re-discovered) photography in 2012. As she puts it: When I finally got my hands on a good camera, I was unable to put it down. I'm lucky to be able to say that I love what I do. People hire me to capture their spirit, their star quality. I bring joy and passion to my job.” She says there is something particularly satisfying about capturing a look, or a moment, and preserving it for someone: "to show them, in a photo, a piece of what makes them special and unique in this world." Currently, Dawn is working on an art project involving macro images of flowers on canvas.  Dawn also recently rediscovered her musical gifts: she has been with the band JK Baughn Inc.  since 2016, playing keyboard, singing lead and harmony, and with Acoustic Dawn since 2018, playing cajon, singing lead and harmony. She wrote and recorded an original Christmas song in 2017, Christmas Groove (available on iTunes and Amazon). See Dawn's website, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest pages.
CLAUDIA RENFRO

Claudia Renfro is a painter and mixed media artist. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture residency in the 1970s and graduated with a BFA from the Cooper Union in 1980. She says her work embodies total creative freedom: “Art-making means permission to be, without judgment or societal conventions - to laugh at life: the good, the messy, the ugly. I sum up the working process as being ‘out of the closet’.”  She works with found objects, what she calls the “detritus of life”: duct tape, hair balls, bits of string and cardboard, gum wrappers, cartoon characters,” creating “a domino effect of chaos and freedom.” There's no doubt that Claudia is an iconoclast: for her, “if there are rules in art, they are meant to be broken. I work intuitively; there is no plan. The unconscious unfolds and dictates. The images are like a bizarre dream, a carnival pulled from memory and my perverse sense of humor.” Claudia has exhibited mostly locally - at Silvermine Arts Center, Ridgefield Guild of Artists, and Carriage Barn Arts Center, at all of which she has won Best of Show awards - but also at The Greenpoint Gallery, Brooklyn, and Site Brooklyn in New York and at Galerie Metanoia in Paris. She won an Honorable Mention at the 2017 Art of the Northeast at Silvermine and was inducted into the Silvermine Guild of Artists that same year. Claudia is a member of the Wilson Avenue Loft Artists. See Claudia's website and Facebook page.
RICK WATSON

Rick Watson is embracing his inner artist after careers in both the corporate and non-profit worlds. Pursuing a strong desire to sculpt metal, he spent a recent summer at the Rhode Island School of Design learning welding and metal fabrication. Additional time with other artists at Silvermine Art Center, under advising metal sculptor Mark Andreas, has helped Rick hone his skills and develop his style. Rick now focuses on sculpting with found metal objects and reclaimed tools, sometimes incorporating stone and kinetic features, to create pieces that mirror nature or evoke a sense of tranquility or whimsy. He has also been experimenting with antique tools and machine parts as art in their own right His life sized sculptures of birds enliven the garden while his flower and insect sculptures bring a garden feel indoors. Rick also sculpts for the spa and studio with his dancers, Buddhas and abstracts.Rick is married with two grown daughters, both of whom are also artists. He enjoys cooking, hiking, food and wine. He and his wife live in Stamford and visit Vermont as often as they can. See Rick's Facebook page.
