There's a particular kind of frustration that comes with watching someone you were genuinely excited to hire fall short of what you expected. You start second-guessing the decision, and sometimes you start second-guessing yourself.

Right now, a lot of leaders are in exactly that spot, and more often than you'd think, the new hire isn't where the real problem lives. Something else is going on underneath, and once you can see it, the whole situation looks different.

That's what today's video and blog are about. I'm not going to give it away here, because it's worth walking through properly.

Let me tell you how this really started.

Five months after we successfully held the very first TEDxMiramar in 2024, our organizer Cece was at my house for Thanksgiving dinner with my family. There was no planning meeting and no agenda. We were talking over a good meal, and suddenly my son Elijah said something and out of that conversation came the idea to host a youth event.

Now almost a year after that first youth event, we are hosting our 2nd Youth event and 4th overall TEDxMiramar event on October 3rd at the Miramar Cultural Center.

It hands young people from ages 9-17 a real stage for the ideas they are already wrestling with. The theme “Growing Up Online” gets deep into their perspectives of never knowing a world without screens, imagine that. Watching these young people own that stage is powerful. I would love for you to be there for it.
