Standing Tall for Conservation

June 21st is World Giraffe Day, a special date chosen to celebrate the tallest animal on Earth and raise awareness for their silent struggle in the wild.

Although giraffes may seem widespread, their numbers have dropped by nearly 30% in just three decades. Today, they are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with some subspecies critically endangered. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching continue to threaten their survival.

At Africam, we’re lucky to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat - drinking at waterholes, browsing treetops, or sharing peaceful moments with other wildlife. Every sighting is a reminder of why conservation matters.

This World Giraffe Day, take a moment to appreciate these incredible animals on our live cams.

🧔 From all of us at Africam - thank you for watching, caring, and sharing.

SafariSnaps Tips: Eastern vs Southern Species -

The Clue Is in the Name!

When tagging animals on SafariSnaps, a helpful rule of thumb is: pay attention to regional names  - they often tell you where the animal is naturally found!

 For example:

  • East African Oryx belongs in East Africa – so if you spot one, it’s most likely on our ol Donyo or other East African cams.

  • A Southern Red-billed Hornbill or a South African Ground Squirrel, on the other hand, are native to Southern Africa – think South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, or Zimbabwe.

So if the name says "Southern," don't tag it on an East African cam, and vice versa. Correct tagging helps everyone learn and keeps our database accurate for future reference. Happy spotting!
