Your Weekly Wildlife Update

News from the black eagle nest!

Here’s the latest:

  • We think the first egg was laid on 28 April.

  • The second egg was only spotted this past weekend for the first time.

  • On the weekend, one of the eagles was seen pecking at an egg, but we believe the second egg is still intact. We’re not sure if it’s the first or second egg since they usually lay a few days apart.

  • Only one chick usually survives because of something called obligate cainism - basically, the stronger chick outcompetes the other.

  • If the second egg doesn’t make it, the eagles tend to abandon the nest. Last year, when this happened, the parents spent less and less time there after the second egg was found to be cracked.

If the first egg was laid on 28 April, and with a typical 44-day incubation, we’re hoping the hatch will happen this week!

We’ll keep an eye on things and share more updates soon.

We wanted to give you a quick heads-up about some recent updates to the Africam community website.

We’ve just refreshed the site and, as part of the update, the multi-stream feature has been moved to the Resources tab. This should make it easier to find alongside other helpful tools and content.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, just head over to the community site and look for the Resources tab in the main menu.
