Summer has been a time of transition and in that transition our newsletter was overlooked. But we're back with more information, recipes and motivation that can support you on your journey to health. If there are certain topics you want to hear about, please let us know. Your opinion matters and we want you to get the most for your valuable inbox space.

Rather than Set Goals, Replace Bad Habits  

We’ve all got our bad habits. In the spirit of transparency a few of mine are: hitting snooze multiple times in the morning, eating in front of the TV, and drinking too much bubbly water.
 
If we resolve to replace a bad habit without focusing on why we need to stop and develop new healthier habits, we won’t succeed in our quest to live a healthier life. 
Health Savings and Flexible Spending Accounts Eligible for Our Program 

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) allow you to save pre tax money to spend on healthcare expenses. So do Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) which some employers offer to their employees. HSAs rollover but FSAs are "use it or lose it." Our medical weight loss program is covered by either option so it's not too late to enroll in our program before 2020. You can see how our program is covered on page 14 of IRS Publication 502
DR. ABBY APPROVED RECIPE
Pan Grilled Chicken with Palisade Peach Salsa

Not only will this peach salsa go well with chicken but make a little 
extra to put on salmon or in fish tacos. You can still get peaches
at Heine's Market in Wheat Ridge, inside Pietra's Pizza 
at 9045 W 44th Ave in Wheat Ridge and at Jensen's on Wadsworth and 9th Avenue in Lakewood. Hurry!

Recipe:
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves, grated
  • 4 (6-oz.) skinless, boneless chicken breasts
  • Cooking spray
  • Chopped peeled fresh Palisade peaches (about 2 large)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chile pepper (jalapeno is fine)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh mint
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Directions
Step 1: Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; add chicken, turning to coat. Heat a grill pan over medium-high. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add chicken to pan; grill 6 minutes on each side or until done. Remove from pan; let stand 5 minutes. 

Step 2: Combine peaches and remaining ingredients in a bowl; serve with chicken.

Unlearning Negative Self Talk 
Negative self talk is when we are critical and demeaning to ourselves.It happens when we say things to ourselves we would never utter to a friend.  

Negative self talk is damaging and unsafe but it can be unlearned. Though like changing any habit, it takes practice. If I ask what a patient what they are doing for exercise and they say they aren't and I ask what is getting in their way, they might respond, "I'm just lazy." Healthful Life MD patients have already taken the step of enrolling in our program and by nature are NOT lazy, but they are engaging in negative self talk. Beyond this, the client is not identifying the real reason they are not working.
