January 19, 2024

ADFF is winding up our 2023/24 season with a festival in Chicago, opportunities to view the films online (more details coming in a future newsletter), and some special screenings. We are also gearing up for the 2024/25 season, which starts in NY on September 25. We've already received many new film submissions, thanks to all of the dedicated filmmakers who pour their creative efforts into making films that ADFF can share with great pride. To submit a film, click here.

There's still time to get tickets for ADFF:Chicago, presented by the Chicago Architecture Center.

If you need relief from the cold Chicago winter, we've got good news for you! You can escape the snow and journey to South Asia with three films that highlight important architects and projects in the region:

The Genius of the Place: The Life and Work of Geoffrey Bawa

Geoffrey Bawa is widely considered one of South Asia’s most influential modern architects. In The Genius of the Place, director Afdhel Aziz introduces us to five of Bawa’s projects through his own personal connection to the work.

The Promise: Architect B.V. Doshi

Balkrishna Doshi, one of India’s most influential 20th-century architects, passed away in 2023 at 95 years old. In The Promise, Doshi shares his sources of inspiration with a presence of mind, humor, and wisdom that leaves us wanting just one more chat with this iconic figure.

The Power of Utopia – Living with Le Corbusier in Chandigarh

Architect Le Corbusier's utopic vision for Chandigarh came into being 70 years ago at a time of unrest, resettlement, and the partition of India. It remains unclear if Corbusier’s design was a success or a failure. The Power of Utopia follows four cultural producers in Chandigarh and asks what can be gleaned from attempts at utopia.

Co-presented by the Consulate General of Switzerland in Chicago.

Sunday 2/4 at 6:30pm

Special Screening: March 2

ADFF is partnering with Grace Farms in New Canaan, CT to present a screening of Modernism, Inc. Following the screening, there will be a conversation between Architect Fred Noyes and Director Jason Cohn.

“No other art (besides dance) needs the third dimension as clearly as architecture."

–Wim Wenders

Director Wim Wenders' new 3D film Anselm is visual storytelling at its finest. The film focuses on painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer, whose work explores the cyclical nature of history. Wenders first started shooting 3D as a way to show the dynamism of architecture. In 2011, ADFF screened If Buildings Could Talk, Wenders' first 3D film which highlights SANAA's Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne. In 2014, ADFF showed Cathedrals of Culture, a documentary made up of six short films about different architectural masterpieces. Wenders was an executive producer of the entire compilation and directed the segment on Hans Scharoun's Berlin Philharmonic. Wenders is currently working on a 3D film about Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.
