Subject: Architects can be parents, too...

September 21, 2023

Throughout the years, we've screened films that follow a filmmaker on a journey to uncover the personal and professional lives of a parent who is also an architect. This theme surfaced in past years with films like My Father, the Genius (Lucia Small, 2002), Rem (Tomas Koolhaas, 2016), Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future (Eric Saarinen and Peter Rosen, 2016), and Designing Life: The Modernist Architecture of Albert C. Ledner (Catherine Ledner, 2017).

This year, we are thrilled to present three films by the children of architect parents. Along similar lines, we are excited to screen Life, Assembled, directed by architect/filmmaker Elodie Degavre, who was inspired to pursue architecture as she observed her neighbor design her childhood home. We hope you'll join us as we dig into these stories that highlight fascinating intersections between architecture and family.

2003 / 116 min / US

Director: Nathanial Kahn

In My Architect, director Nathanial Kahn takes us on a heartbreaking and humorous journey of his attempts to reconnect with his deceased father, renowned architect Louis I. Kahn. When he died in 1974, Kahn left behind a personal life of secrets and broken promises. The riveting narrative takes us from the men’s room of Penn Station to the bustling streets of Bangladesh to the inner sanctums of Jerusalem politics. In a documentary with all the emotional impact of a dramatic feature film, Nathaniel’s journey becomes a universal investigation of identity, a celebration of art, and an exploration of life itself.
