Subject: ADFF:NY and more

September 25, 2025

ADFF:NY is just around the corner! This season, we have some special film-related events. One is a discussion with Bruce Mau and Bisi Williams that uses a film about unhoused people as a jumping off point to think about ethical design solutions. This will be presented only at our New York and Chicago festivals. We also have a special trivia event based on brutalist architecture in movies, which will happen in New York, Vancouver, and Toronto.

I Have A Name (Special Event)

2025 / 40 min / US

Director: Eric S. Vaughn

Event Hosts: Bisi Williams and Bruce Mau

Wednesday, October 15 at 8:00 PM

Join us for a 45-minute screening of I Have A Name, followed by a 45-minute conversation with global design leaders Bisi Williams and Bruce Mau of Massive Change Network. Drawing from their work on “Thorny Opportunities,” Williams and Mau will share insights into how we can design the world we need—starting with the unhoused crisis. Their talk will reflect on lessons learned from a Life-Centered Design workshop conducted earlier that day with college students.

I Have A Name, presented by Theorem Media and Adam Bronfman, brings audiences face-to-face with the unhoused crisis through the eyes of artist and activist Jon Linton. This public screening and conversation with Williams and Mau will offer an opportunity to engage in a deeper conversation about how art can influence designers and become a tool for positive change.

The Big Brutal Quiz (Special Event)

2024 / 90 min / Netherlands

Event Host: Architect Jord den Hollender

Thursday, October 16 at 6:30 PM

Friday, October 17 at 8:45 PM

Join us for a lively quiz show hosted by award-winning filmmaker and architect Jord den Hollander. This first-of-its-kind ADFF event is a trivia night that dives into the dramatic intersection of brutalist design and film. From dystopian futures to sci-fi classics, no architectural style has cast a heavier shadow across cinema than brutalism. This interactive event challenges architects, designers, and film buffs to match legendary buildings with more than 20 on-screen appearances and vice versa.

This year, there's one film specially programmed for New York audiences. Unlike most of our lineup, The Harvard Five will show only at ADFF:NY.

The Harvard Five

2025 / 60 min / US

Director: Devon Chivvis

Wednesday, October 15 at 6:00 PM + Q&A with Devon Chivvis and Bruce Becker, moderated by Hilary Lewis

The Harvard 5: A Story of Love, Architecture, and a Design Revolution reveals the little-known story of five groundbreaking modernist architects and designers who sparked a revolution in the unlikely setting of New Canaan, Connecticut. Philip Johnson, John Johansen, Landis Gores, Eliot Noyes, and Marcel Breuer emerged in the years following the Second World War with a bold sense of hope and a belief in the power of design. Their avant-garde ideals and radical homes, often mocked as “Kleenex box houses,” stunned the residents of this traditional New England town. Despite initial resistance, the Harvard Five found New Canaan to be an ideal canvas for applying Bauhaus principles to American life. What began as a local experiment grew into an intellectual and architectural movement that transformed the community and impacted modern architecture worldwide.
