September 28, 2023

This season, we're screening 19 amazing films representing 11 different countries. We are thrilled to announce that we've added two more films to the season's selection: The Meis van der Rohes and Point of Origin. Both films will be US and Canadian premieres at their ADFF screenings.

In The Mies van der Rohes, filmmaker Sabine Gisiger introduces us to the many women who impacted the life of world-renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Drawing on a private archive of footage, photos, and documents, the film retells the story of this iconic architect as remembered by his eldest daughter, Georgia.

After the film, we'll hear from Architect Dirk Lohan, the grandson of Mies van der Rohe (left).

Co-presented by the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York.

DOUBLE FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS: Several of our programs are made up of two films shown together. These double features focus on some of the most important elements of architecture– from industry leaders to design principles.

An impossibly narrow piece of steep mountain slope in Austria, a building site will only allow for a 16-foot-wide house. This challenge sparks the interest of well-known architect Rem Koolhaas, who has not built a private house since his acclaimed House in Bordeaux over 20 years ago.

CLIMATE ACTION

We've designed our way into a climate crisis, and now we have to design our way out. ADFF's climate-themed double feature makes a great case for this theory.

10/14 @ 5:30pm
2023 / 62 mins / Ireland

DESIGNED BY WOMEN

10/14 @ 3:45pm + Q&A with Clodagh

ADFF's feminist film double feature sheds light on a few of the countless women who have shaped the field.

Women in Architecture (US Premiere)

10/14 @ 3:45pm + Q&A with Clodagh
2022 / 20 min / Switzerland

Director: Boris Noir

There is a staggering inequity in the field of architecture– women principals are the exception, not the rule. Meet three architects who are breaking down those barriers.

Clodagh

10/14 @ 3:45pm + Q&A with Clodagh
2022 / 50 min / Ireland
Director: Oda O'Carroll

Mononymously named Clodagh has been an international design icon for over half a century. She has defied barriers of gender, age, and nationality to forge a critically-acclaimed global career. In Clodagh, director Oda O’Carroll tells the story of how courageous personal decisions shaped her life, impacted her family, and defined how she views the world today. The film leaves audiences with a sense of what drives a pioneer in the world of design.

After this double feature, audiences will hear from Clodagh herself (left).
