ADFF is more than film screenings, it's a place to engage in conversations with a wide range of people during the festival. Not only do we screen the finest new documentaries about architecture and design, but we have amazing people and industry luminaries who participate in post-screening Q&A's and panel discussions. Below are some of the not-to-be-missed people who will be attending the upcoming festivals: ADFF:DC February 21-24 and ADFF:LA March 13-17.

Susan Burton founded "A New Way of Life Re-Entry Project" in 2010. She was named a CNN Top Ten Hero and received the prestigious Citizen Activist Award from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Additionally, she is a recipient of both the Encore Purpose Prize (2012) and the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award (2014). In 2015, on the 50th Anniversary of Selma and the Voting Rights Act, Susan was named by the Los Angeles Times as "one of eighteen new civil rights leaders" in the nation.

Susan Burton, along with the architect Ken Jandura and the film's director, Ultan Guifoyle will be in conversation on Feb 21 after the opening night screening of Frank Gehry: Building Justice. Buy tickets.
Dietrich Neumann is the professor of History of Modern Architecture and the director of Urban Studies at Brown University. He has just finished a study of the genesis and critical reception of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion (Princeton University Press, 2019), and is working on a Mies biography (Yale University Press, 2020), as well as publications on George Nelson and Raymond Hood. Dietrich  was the first Vincent Scully Visiting Professor at Yale and is a member of the Committee on Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art.

Dietrich will be joined in conversation wth Susan Piedmont-Palladino, an architect and the Director of Virginia Tech’s Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center. They will be speaking on February 22 after the 6:00 pm screening of Meis on Scene. Barcelona in two acts. Buy tIckets.


Leslie E Robertson is an internationally acclaimed structural engineer with many notable achievements, including being the lead structural engineer of the original World Trade Center, the world’s tallest building at the time, Haunted by its destruction, this unique bond with humanity solidifies his place in American history. A builder of iconic high-rises and cultural centers across the globe, it is Robertson's fight for human rights as a pacifist/activist that drives him and shapes the lives of others. The film portrays his unfiltered collaborations with visionary architects and the powerful union with accomplished engineer and wife SawTeen See, the woman who emboldened, expanded and ultimately saved him.

Les wil be in conversation with Sawteen See and Chase Rynd, Executive Director of the National Building Museum. The conversation will be on February 23 following the 7:00 pm screening of Leaning Out. Buy tIckets.


Anthony Guida is an architect and design educator. He is currently the Design Director for MEOW WOLF, a Santa Fe-based, multi-disciplinary arts and entertainment company that creates mind-blowing immersive experiences. He oversees the design and planning of new building projects and exhibitions as well as the collaborative development and detailing of interactive environments and installations.

Anthony will be in conversation with architect Mark Regulinski, from Cafritz Enterprises after the screening of Meow Wolf: Origin Story on Saturday, February 23 at 5:00pm. Buy tickets.

Joseph Rosa is Director and CEO of the Frye Art Museum. Previously, he was Director of the University of Michigan Museum of Art; the John H. Bryan Curatorial Chair of Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago; the Helen Hilton Raiser Curator of Architecture and Design at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Curator of Architecture at the Heinz Architectural Center at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA; the Chief Curator at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. He is also the author of many books including "Albert Frey, Architect".

Joseph will be joined in conversation on Friday, February 22 after the 6:15 screening of Frey:Part 1 - The Architectural Envoy. Buy Tickets.

Christopher Hawthorne was appointed by LA's mayor, Eric Garcetti to be the city's Chief Design Officer. Prior to joining the staff at City Hall, Hawthorne was architecture critic for the Los Angeles Times from 2004 - 2018. He wrote and directed the documentary That Far Corner: Frank Lloyd Wright in Los Angeles.

Christopher will be at the festival Thursday, March 14th and participate in a Q&A after the 6:15 screening of his film. Buy tIckets.

Michael Webb has authored more than 20 books on architecture and design, most recently "Architects' Houses", and a memoir. He is a regular contributor to leading journals in the United States, Asia and Europe. Growing up in London, he was an editor at The Times and Country Life, before moving to the U.S., where he directed film programs for the American Film Institute and curated a Smithsonian exhibition on Hollywood.

Michael will lead a discussion with the architect Frank Escher, Susan MacDonald from the Getty Conservation Institute and the writer and architectural critic Edward Lifson. The panel will follow the March 16th 3:30 screening of Meis on Scene. Barcelona in two acts. Buy tickets.

Frances Anderton is the host of DnA: Design and Architecture, on KCRW and KCRW.com. She is also a full-time producer of KCRW's national and local current affairs shows To The Point and Which Way, LA?

In addition, Ms. Anderton is the LA Editor for Dwell Magazine. She is a regular contributor to the New York Times and many other publications on Los Angeles design and architecture.

Frances will lead a panel on opening night (March 13) after the screening of Frank Gehry: Building Justice. On the panel will be Ingrid Archie from "A New Way of Life Re-Entry Project", and the film director Ultan Guilfoyle. Opening night is a special VIP reception and screening. Buy tickets.
