From the Steppe to the Classroom: Professor Desmond Delk

Meet Professor Desmond Delk!

Professor Delk is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Langston University.

He first came to Mongolia in 2024 as a participant in the ACMS-led, US State Department-funded Overseas Faculty Development Seminar focused on public health challenges and opportunities in Mongolia.

This experience inspired him to apply for a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach at the Mongolian National University of Health Sciences in the spring of 2026. Read on to learn more about how his experiences with ACMS in Mongolia impacted his development as an educator and health professional.

"The American Center for Mongolian Studies is the bridge to Mongolia for me. I was accepted into the CAORC Overseas Faculty Development Seminar hosted by ACMS, where faculty from across the U.S. travel to Mongolia to experience the culture while learning about connections between the environment and public health. During that time, I immersed myself in the culture and also built connections with both my counterparts from the U.S. and my new friends from Mongolia.

In fact, the relationships I built as we visited universities and organizations were the support I needed to return to the country on a U.S. Fulbright Scholar grant to teach at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences during the spring 2026 semester.

I attribute this achievement to the intentionally well-crafted experience ACMS curated for the CAORC-OFDS in summer 2024. And the connections I built with the ACMS staff have not ceased. When I returned to Mongolia as a Fulbright Scholar, ACMS helped me secure my accommodations and transportation and even assisted me in the process of obtaining my residency. And of course, this is where I took my language classes to help me navigate this beautiful country.

ACMS has supported me before, during, and after my time in Mongolia. I appreciate them, and I consider them family."
