Dear Friends of Wilbur:

I was planning on writing you and sharing some thoughts on the benefits of Wilbur's medicinal waters for sleeping...both napping and during the night. It then occurred to me that if you are reading this, you have already received these particular benefits of immersing in Wilbur's natural waters. Therefore, instead of further extolling Wilbur's health virtues I will share another important piece of health information I believe is of value to each and everyone one of you.

On my radio program, Mind Body Health & Politics, I interviewed Dan Buettner, who, along with his brother, Tony Buettner, were commissioned by National Geographic Magazine, to research and report on the 5 groups of people in the world who people live longer and healthier lives than most of the rest of the world.

The five groups are:

1 - Barbagia region of Sardinia – world’s highest concentration of male centenarians.
2 - Ikaria, Greece – Aegean Island, one of the world’s lowest rates of middle age mortality and the lowest rates of dementia.
3 - Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica – World’s lowest rates of middle age mortality, second highest concentration of male centenarians.
4 - Seventh Day Adventists – Highest concentration is around Loma Linda, California. They live 10 years longer than their North American counterparts.
5 - Okinawa, Japan – Females over 70 are the longest-lived population in the world.
Tony wrote a book about the 5 groups called: The Blue Zones. In the book he lists 9 principles that the 5 groups share. Because this is such important information, for your immediate convenience I quote the following from the brothers Buettner:

1. Move Naturally
"The world’s longest-lived people don’t pump iron, run marathons or join gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it. They grow gardens and don’t have mechanical conveniences for house and yard work."

2. Purpose
"The Okinawans call it “Ikigai” and the Nicoyans call it “plan de vida;” for both it translates to “why I wake up in the morning.” Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy".

3. Down Shift
"Even people in the Blue Zones experience stress. Stress leads to chronic inflammation, associated with every major age-related disease. What the world’s longest-lived people have that we don’t are routines to shed that stress. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors, Adventists pray, Ikarians take a nap and Sardinians do happy hour".

4. 80% Rule
“Hara hachi bu” – the Okinawan, 2500-year old Confucian mantra said before meals reminds them to stop eating when their stomachs are 80 percent full. The 20% gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between losing weight or gaining it. People in the Blue Zones eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening and then they don’t eat any more the rest of the day".

5. Plant Slant
"Beans, including fava, black, soy and lentils, are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Meat—mostly pork—is eaten on average only five times per month. Serving sizes are 3-4 oz., about the size of deck or cards".

6. Wine @ 5
"People in all Blue Zones (except Adventists) drink alcohol moderately and regularly. Moderate drinkers outlive non-drinkers. The trick is to drink 1-2 glasses per day (preferably Sardinian Cannonau wine), with friends and/or with food. And no, you can’t save up all weekend and have 14 drinks on Saturday".

7. Belong
"All but five of the 263 centenarians we interviewed belonged to some faith-based community. Denomination doesn’t seem to matter. Research shows that attending faith-based services four times per month will add 4-14 years of life expectancy".

8. Loved Ones First
"Successful centenarians in the Blue Zones put their families first. This means keeping aging parents and grandparents nearby or in the home (It lowers disease and mortality rates of children in the home too.). They commit to a life partner (which can add up to 3 years of life expectancy) and invest in their children with time and love (They’ll be more likely to care for you when the time comes)".

9. Right Tribe
"The world’s longest lived people chose–or were born into–social circles that supported healthy behaviors, Okinawans created ”moais”–groups of five friends that committed to each other for life. Research from the Framingham Studies shows that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness are contagious. So the social networks of long-lived people have favorably shaped their health behaviors".

"To make it to age 100, you have to have won the genetic lottery. But most of us have the capacity to make it well into our early 90’s and largely without chronic disease. As the Adventists demonstrate, the average person’s life expectancy could increase by 10-12 years by adopting a Blue Zones lifestyle."

For additional information I refer you to Tony's book the Blue Zones or Dan's interview, with me, on my web site: MindBodyHealthPolitics.org. I believe it is in all of our interests to take this Blue Zone information seriously.
On a personal note: with regard to the nutritional component of the Blue Zones, Jolee and I continue to be 95% veggie slanted. Her 5% animal ingestion is 4% fish and 1% chicken. I eat a big steak or prime rib for my 5% and sometimes spicy charred ribs.

Science states that genetics only accounts for 20% of our longevity which indicates we each have 80% of our life span to influence.

Say hello the next time you are at Wilbur. We are the very tall couple with the smiling eyes and laughing hearts who are often on bikes or the electric ATV with solar panels on top.

With affection for each of you,

Richard and Jolee,

Are you ready to take your Wilbur healing journey to the next level? How about a spiritual reading/healing during your next visit?

How many of us come to Wilbur to rest, rejuvenate and get still to find our answers for a burning question in our lives or to look at our next step in healing on many levels? For over 20 years I have been coming to Wilbur for its extraordinary waters and healing benefits. I have found that it is an ideal space to offer what I love to do most which is spiritual guidance through readings and healings, but many may not be aware of the benefits of this style of reading which is also quite healing.

Have you ever come to Wilbur with the following questions or thoughts?
  • I need a healing on my body condition and/or emotional state.
  • What should I do about this job?
  • Why am I so sensitive!
  • What should I do about this relationship?
  • Why do I keep having this recurring obstacle in my life?
  • Why am I not able to manifest my dream job/relationship/money etc?
  • What is my next step on my spiritual path?
These are all fantastic questions to look at in a reading space. Many times in healing the body, mental or emotional states, even when all the correct medicine and procedures are being implemented, the patient still does not fully heal. This can be due to a limiting ‘picture’ or misbelief stored in their body that blocks the healing. In a reading we get to look at who each of you are on a level as the vast Spirit that you are and where there are limiting pictures that can be released in order to be more fully You and heal yourself. Also it is important to look if there are any blocks to receiving the abundance you seek or to having your healing.

While I would never tell someone what choice to make in a relationship or a career, I will read the energies of pros and cons and where there are blocks. Then we look at what is the true nature of the individual, your natural strengths and what type situations you would thrive and have much to add to the job or relationship.

Sessions are approximately 60 minutes, including a hands-on healing if you wish, and are recorded for your review later. Pricing per session is $135, for reservations please contact Wilbur at 530-473-2306. For additional information on Julia, www.JuliaHarrell.com.
