Dear Friends of Wilbur:

Balneotherapy (Latinbalneum "bath") is the treatment of disease by bathing, usually practiced at spas. It is part of the traditional medicine of many cultures and originated in hot springs such as the Dead Sea. The word “spa” is  used as a Latin abbreviation for: S = salud, P = per, A = aqua, or “Health through Water.” Mineral waters at spas are sometimes laden with minerals  and the waters at Wilbur Hot Springs are especially rich in minerals including sulfur, and Lithium.

Balneology, the practice of using natural mineral water for the treatment and cure of disease, has a long history. People have used geothermal water and mineral waters for bathing and their health for many thousand of years.  Based on archeological finds in Asia, mineral water has been used for bathing since the Bronze Age, about 5000 years ago.

Every major hot spring in the U.S. has some record of use by the Native American Indians--some for over 10,000 years. These springs were also known as neutral ground, to which warriors could travel and rest unmolested by other tribes. Here they would recuperate from battle.  The waters now known as Wilbur Hot Springs were the healing and ceremonial grounds of the Yoche De tribe of the Wintun Nation which presently owns the huge gambling casino on highway 20 just 30 miles from Wilbur.

Getting away from stresses to refresh and revitalize your body and your mind are the main reasons why people visit Wilbur Hot Springs, and such visits  are becoming an increasingly important part of American life. The 7-day miracle, as some refer to a spa vacation, provides you with a necessary interlude to change your pace of life and your way of being, to lose weight, shape up, reduce stress, gain confidence, reassess your goals, recharge your vitality, learn new exercise and nutrition behaviors, reward yourself with time out for yourself--and have a good time, a carefree holiday.

Say hello next time you visit Wilbur. We are the tall couple with the smiling eyes and laughing hearts.

With affection for each of you,
