Dear Friends of Wilbur,

In the psychology laboratory we have an Anechoic Chamber. It is built to specifications so that the ambient sound inside the chamber, is minimal. The Anechoic Chamber is used for experiments on Stimulus Deprivation. The name was quickly changed to Stimulus Isolation because even when there is minimal stimulation from outside of ourselves we still have an abundance of self created stimulation.

There are also stimulus isolation chambers built to hold body-temperature salt water, in which subjects are submersed, as another method of limiting external input.

Sold commercially, there are Samadhi Tanks in which people float, sometimes face down, in very quiet rooms. My dear lifelong friend, and colleague, Dr Jim Guinan, of Maumee, Ohio, had a Samadhi Tank in his lovely converted private home to office building at the Crossroads.

Engaging in stimulus isolation is fun, educational and potentially consciousness changing. One can hear liquid flowing on the inside. I heard my blood as whooshing. The sound of the heart beating can be omnipresent: both assuring and overbearing. I thought I could see the electricity inside when golden strands of light appeared on one of my inner visual screens. Looking inside the mind is even more fascinating in deep quiet. Over time, spatial consciousness seeps in and eventually takes over. Going this deep requires a guide to take care.

The temperature, and consistency of the medicinal water in Wilbur's Flume #1 are perfect for gracefully approaching safe Stimulus Isolation.
Here is a method of safely approaching Stimulus Isolation in Wilbur's Flume#1.

Bring a snorkel to Wilbur. Put it on while sitting in Flume #1 and float face down. Start with 15 minutes and work your way up if you care to. Strength of effect is related to time in position. For longer explorations, you may have a large water container sitting on the deck with a tube that runs to your mouth. For runners its called a Camel Pack. Otherwise just come up every 15 minutes and take some sips from your bottle.
Given enough time, and easy access to clean air and drinking water, stimulus isolation, allows for, and facilitates, changes in consciousness so large, that they are on a level with strong psychedelic medicine.

Join me again next month and I will share my favorite way of creating stimulus isolation while immersed in Wilbur's medicine water.

Kindly say hello the next time you are at Wilbur. We are the tall couple with the smiling eyes and laughing hearts who tool around on bikes or an electric ATV with photovoltaic cells on the roof.

With affection for each of you,
