Dear Friends of Wilbur:

By the time I moved to Wilbur in 1972 I was educated enough to avoid processed foods and certainly bacon. However, at that time my decision was more based on not wanting to clog up my cardio vascular system with sludge than my full belief that nitrates and nitrites actually caused cancer. Soon, thereafter, I fortunately parted ways with nitrates and nitrites

The World Health Organization, WHO, recently issued a world wide statement that it is now scientifically accepted that processed foods including bacon, increase the probability of getting cancer. I feel redeemed.

In 1968, in the face of colleagues warning me that it would destroy my professional psychotherapy practice, if I prohibited smoking in my San Francisco clinic, I did so. My patients, who smoked, went outside, happily.

In the 1970s there was unpleasantness in restaurants between the vast majority, smokers, who smoked everywhere, and the non smokers who did not want to smoke other people’s smoke…and especially while we were eating. Now we take smoke free restaurants for granted. At least in most of California.

At Wilbur, out of deep respect and compassion for those smoking cigarettes, pipes and cigars, we have always provided one smoking area. The smoking area used to be on the bridge going to the Yoga deck and then it was moved to an area in the Ramada.

In these past 45 years I have watched organic food stores transition from being a rarity to be a full blown corporate enterprise.

It turns out that those of us who realized that much of the food we were consuming was very dangerous were actually correct. Eating clean organic food turns out not to be a hippy dippy food fad.

Eating food with, or without, chemical additives has a profound effect on the course of our lives.

The food we ingest, the air we breathe, the water we drink, the stressors we feel, over a period of time, all add up, sometimes multiply, and often compound. We determine our future health, and illness, by how we live our present.

Consider, just one 12 ounce can of a carbonated beverage, aka soda, or 12 ounces of beer, or 6 ounces of wine, every day, for 3 years, results in a weight gain of 47 pounds.

It intimidates me to think about straining 29, 200 cups of coffee (2 cups/day for 40 years) through my poor little bladder. Think of one cup of coffee spilled on a white shirt or table cloth and then consider sending 29,200 cups into your bladder.

If we strive for the highest quality we can, in each of the four critical areas,
Food, water, air, stress, over a lifetime, we significantly enhance our chances of living robustly until our passing.

This is not voodoo. This is science.

We maintain Wilbur Hot Springs as a refuge, a Sanctuary, from the vibratory stressors, of every day life, as it has come to be lived.

Come, join us in Wilbur's Nature Preserve, containing prescription grade nature (RxN) and immerse in Wilbur's prescription grade natural geothermal mineral water (RxG). "In all the world no waters like these".

Say hello the next time you are At Wilbur. We are the tall couple with the smiling eyes and laughing hearts.

With affection for each of you,

Richard and Jolee,

Lessons from the Land

Only days after we published last month's newsletter touting our perfectly perfect weather and our days spent in t-shirts, we found ourselves bundled up in our scarfs and beanies trying to find protection from the cold rains, and harsh winds, humbly reminding us who’s really in charge of this land.

At times like this, in its provoked reflection, we find ourselves smiling at the almost humorous absurdity and arrogance of our past selves, and, in awe of the ability of nature to swing so drastically from one extreme to the other. It is in this reflection we find that there are many lessons to be learned from the land, and the lessons may not always be so obvious.

A lesson easily extracted could be that we must remain flexible and open to change; that in an instant, what once was, is barely recognizable. This is the lesson extracted from the reactionary person.

Another person could extract that you must always be prepared for every possibility which could arise, and to plan for everything. This is the lesson extracted from the proactive person.

Lastly, some may not see a lesson at all. Some may think to themselves, “what poor weather”, and find themselves waiting for the next day that is “good” to brighten their life. This person’s mood literally changes with the weather.

There is nothing wrong with any of these lessons. However, I propose that there is a less obvious lesson that resides a bit deeper in the subconscious. This lesson has no fear attached and speaks more to our spirit than to our brain. This is because these moments are born from the land, and the land is all spirit.

It is in these rapidly changing moments that the land reminds us of the simple principle of presence - to abandon expectation, to experience and enjoy today as it is, and to not anticipate tomorrow. It reminds you to breathe with its wind, bask in its sun, and be reborn in its rain. It is in moments like these with twists and turns that you must stop and feel - feel grateful to be here, here in the world, and here at Wilbur on this beautiful land.

It's in these unpredictable out of control moments where you are reminded to be here in whatever the weather may be - without the distraction or the pacification of cars, netflix, tasks, and time. It is in these moments you remember that you are of this earth and of the land. So be like the land … flow.
