WORKSHOP

Beyond Buy Local:

Building Businesses that Serve Place

Businesses play a significant role in determining community outcomes, and in a time of shifting global priorities, the work of business in Canada must be oriented around place. That means rooting economic activity in the distinct conditions and capacities of communities and aligning business practices with the long-term well-being of people and planet. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to Shorefast’s model of community business and their groundbreaking certification mark, Economic Nutrition.

FIELD TRIP

This tour will explore the site's layered history, innovative design, and the meaningful collaborations that shaped its renewal. Learn how this once-overlooked promontory has been reimagined as a resilient, inclusive, and ecologically vibrant public space that restores vital connections between people, place, and the Kichi Zibi (Ottawa River).

FIELD TRIP

Wateridge Village: A Master-planned Community Steeped in Rich History and Diverse Housing Opportunities

Tour Wateridge Village, a 310-acre community located on the former Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe, just minutes from downtown Ottawa. Steeped in rich history, the site has evolved over generations, having been shaped by the Algonquin peoples, the Canadian Military, the Francophonie, and many others. Wateridge Village is master planned by Canada Lands Company, a federal Crown corporation that acquires, transforms and reintegrates federal surplus lands enabling much needed housing.

WORKSHOP

Building Connective Tissue Across Canada: The Importance of Collaboration

Strong local networks and partnerships across government, business, and grassroots organizations are key levers for a community’s ability to create solutions from both the ground up and the top down. Shorefast’s Community Economies Pilot has shown that lasting economic progress depends on this spirit of collaboration. Building on the successes of the Shorenet Cohort partners - Shorefast will lead a design session to explore what it would mean to extend this approach from the community level to the national level as we work to build a network of places across Canada.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION & INDOOR TOUR

Public Libraries As Social Infrastructure: Building Community Prosperity And Resilience

Public libraries are among the last universally accessible public spaces—welcoming everyone, free of charge, and without barriers. Beyond books, they serve as places where people gather, explore their interests, connect to vital services, and build networks of support. Through a hard hat tour of Ādisōke, the new Ottawa Public Library set to open in 2026, this session examines how libraries function as essential social infrastructure.
