Subject: April Update: New CRIS Cohorts + Project Spotlight

This Month: New CRIS cohorts & featured projects

Resilient Housing Cohort: Now Open

In partnership with the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) the CRIS is launching a call for non-profit, municipal, First Nation or society owned housing owners and operators to join the Resilient Housing Cohort. This program is an opportunity to receive free expert services to enhance climate readiness and low-carbon opportunities for new build or retrofit housing projects.

Green Infrastructure Cohort: Deadline Extended!

Canada’s smaller communities are facing increasing pressures from climate change, especially in the areas of stormwater management, water quality, and shoreline resilience. To help address these challenges, the CRIS, in partnership with NAMS Canada, is offering targeted, hands-on support for Green Infrastructure projects in local governments and First Nations across the country.

Infrastructure Benchmarking Initiative

Through the CRIS, Roster Expert AECOM Engineering is offering a new small municipal benchmarking initiative. This program is open to 15 municipalities serving communities of under 30,000 people. The benchmarking metrics must address climate change resilience for projects within a capital/asset management plan.

Participating municipalities will receive the following from this initiative:

  • Metrics that compare your infrastructure data with other Canadian municipalities

  • A review of your capital/asset management plan using the benchmarking metrics

  • Climate change resilience assessment of one of your key capital projects (to be chosen jointly)

  • Benchmarking metric review session with peer municipalities

  • A summary report

Toolkit Corner: Climate Insight Updates

New features are here! Updates now available on Climate Insight make it even easier for all Canadian communities to find options to move from assessing climate hazards and risks to addressing them:
  • Use the new Climate-Smart Home Explorer to find options for your communities’ homes that deliver measurable climate benefits and long-term cost savings.

  • Find a list of common infrastructure options to help address the climate risks to your project at the end of Climate Insight’s rapid risk assessment tool.

  • See the big picture: use the Climate Insight map to find your Community Profile for a snapshot of various climate hazards and their likelihood now and into the future, alongside key climate, infrastructure, and social vulnerability data.

CRIS Sucess Story: Lubicon Lake Cree Band

At a moment when communities across Canada are grappling with wildfire smoke, extreme heat, and rapidly shifting seasonal patterns. The Lubicon Lake Cree Band in northern Alberta is taking proactive, community‑led action to protect its people, infrastructure, and way of life — and their approach offers a model for other small and remote communities facing similar risks.

With 12 new community buildings planned, the Band recognized the need for expert guidance to ensure these structures are safe, durable, and climate resilient. Through the CRIS, they accessed specialized climate and infrastructure expertise at no cost, helping them strengthen building envelopes, structural systems, and HVAC performance to reduce fire and smoke hazards.

The collaboration resulted in the Lubicon Lake Climate Resiliency Guide, a practical, locally tailored roadmap that outlines immediate and long‑term actions to safeguard the community’s infrastructure and natural resources.
