Hi Friend,

'I speak to you as relative newcomers to the great task of guarding and being kin to the sacred forests of the northwest, those communities of trees which influence our global ecosystem. I recognize the great responsibility that you have, to find some way to be of service to the Mother Tree gives us so much. The work that you are being called to do requires you to find the places where our disconnection with the Mother Tree happened, and to heal that wound, and to re-connect." 

Thus I began my talk yesterday at the Mother Tree School hosted by the Sierra Club in British Columbia, a cohort of (primarily nonindigenous) pastors and ministers who are seeking to help their congregations take more ecologically-oriented action - especially meaningful actions - in a region that has watched their forests burn, mother whales suffer their dead babies, and rainfall shift. I was honored to be the third speaker in a series of brilliant heart-minded people, including Suzanne Simard, the beautiful writer of the book, Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the wisdom of the forest.  

When Suzanne talked, she discussed the importance of the forests in the northwest (sometimes called the Amazon of the North. The message I shared with them is not just for the people of the northwest.  It is also for you. For the many who are feeling the tug, the call of Spirit of Reconnection in these times.

Understanding roots is key for trees.  Nourishment often comes beneath the surface.  Reconnecting and re-membering is an embodied, spiritual process. One where we can’t always use our ‘normal’ way of seeing. 

Understanding in this rooted way shifts our comprehension (including but not only intellectual). With this different comprehension of the sources of our challenges arises different understandings of possible 'solution' (I say 'solution' with a certain hesitancy, as I'm not always a fan of the problem/solution framing, but that's a conversation for another time.)

All of which is to say: origin stories matter.  For the future, as well as for the past: certainly for the present.
